AUSTIN James E. Austin, 47, of Independence, died Sunday (December 26, 1971) at University Hospital from Injuries he suffered in an accident on Aug. 18, 1969 at the Morgantown Research Center of the Bureau of Mine. He had been working in a gas producer when the automatic valve cut off and depleted his oxygen supply. He did not regain consciousness after the accident. He was born June 13, 1924, at Independence, a son of Charles Austin of Independence and the late Etta Costello Austin. He was employed by the Bureau of Mines for 22 years prior to the accident. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the South Point United Methodist Church and a Sunday School teacher for many years. In addition to the father, he is survived by three brothers, Kenneth of Grafton Road, and Raymond R. and Charles H. of Rt. 1, Independence; eight sisters, Mrs. Geneva McCrobie and Mrs. Betty Turner of Morgantown, Mrs. Delores Howell, Mrs. Jean Sanders, Mrs. Frances Grimm, Mrs. Mary Pitch and Mrs. Virginia Strang of Grafton Road, and Miss Ferne Austin of Rt. 1, Independence. Friends may call at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home Tuesday from 10 a.m. to the hour of services, at 3 p.m. with the Rev. George E. W. Bartholow officiating. Burial will follow in Halleck Cemetery.
