He was born Sept. 4, 1893, at Newburg, a son of the late Charles and Mary Ashby. He was a member of the Chestnut Ridge United Methodist Church. He was a retired coal miner. He is survived by his widow, Mary F. Ashby; one son, Charles of Hyattsville, Md.; two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Lauman of College Park, Md., and Mrs. Genevieve Kellar of Courtland, Ohio; five sisters, Mrs. Ruth Ball of Buckhannon, Mrs. Eva Sanders of Aurora, Mrs. Louise Nine of Teniesta, Pa., Mrs. Helen Silcott of Weston and Mrs. Irene White of Charleston; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter and one sister. Friends are being received at the Taylor Funeral Home in Newburg after 11 a.m. Thursday until noon Friday when the body will be moved to the Shay's Chapel United Methodist Church to lie in state from 1-2 p.m., the time of the service with the Rev. Howard O. McGinnis officiating. Burial will follow in the Shay's Chapel Cemetery.
