Va. (UPI)--Funeral services for Sam Jones, a hard-throwing righthander who hurled a no-hitter and won 20 games in the National League, will be held at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church here at 11 a.m. Tuesday. The Stewartville, Ohio, native died of cancer at West Virginia University Hospital Friday night (November 5, 1971). Jones, 45, had resided much of his life in this small northern West Virginia coal mining town. The body of Jones, who had been in and out of hospitals since June, was at Domico Funeral Home at Fairmont. Jones, last admitted to the hospital Sept. 21, retired in 1966 after spending several seasons as a player-coach with the Columbus Jets of the International League. Winning more than 100 games in his big league careel. "Sad Sam," or "Toothpick," hurled for the Giants, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Detroit, Baltimore, Cleveland and Chicago's Cubs. His no-hitter came for the Cubs against the Pirates May 12, 1955. Jones, whose survivors include two sons, Mike and Nick, called the no-hitter "the best game I've ever pitched."
