B. Bass (should be Vass) died suddenly at 11 o'clock at her home here. Surviving are her husband and three step-children, Mrs. Garring East, Low Moor; Rex Bass, New York City; Mrs. Hattie Smith, Edgewater, FL. One brother, Bernie Ellison, of Union, WV, and one sister, Mrs. Callie Arritt of Covington, VA, also survive. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Covington Virginian, Tues. 5/12/1936. Vass, who died at her home here Tuesday morning, was conducted at the Methodist Church by Rev. J. H. Billingsley of Woodstock, VA, assisted by Rev. Harry Balthis, of White Sulphur Springs, at 2:30 Thursday afternoon. Interment was made in Hillcrest Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dr. James Wetzel, K. W. Ballard, W. W. Buran, Rufus Bowling, G. M. Gillespie, E. W. Brackman; honorary pallbearers were: E. B. Kirkpatrick, B. T. Bowers, W. c. Laudermilk; J. B. Baker, Ed East, John Remley, Alvie Buckland, J. E. Forren, C. W. Keyer, S. C. [Submitted by Louise Perkins , September 20, 1998] ************************************************************************* OBIT: Monroe Watchman, Vol. 36, June 20, 1907, No. 21; Mrs. Hugh Vass died at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Perdue, near Wayside, this county early last Saturday morning, June 15, 1907, of consumption, after an illness of several months. Mrs. Vass was about 35 years of age. She was a most estimable lady and her death is a sore grief to her very numerous friends. her husband (who is a son of Mr. A. C. Vass) and three little children survive her. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. W. Brubaker at Upton Church last Sunday, after which the remains of the departed lady were interred in the near by cemetery. Vass, 88, of Ronceverte, formerly of White Sulphur Springs, died yesterday, June 17, in the C & O Hospital, Clifton Forge, VA after an extended illness. He was a retired telegraph operator and a life member of the C & O Veteran employee Association. He was a member of Emmanuel Methodist Church of White Sulphur Springs, Alleghany Lodge No. 23, I.O.O.F. of Covington, VA, Kate Carpenter Rebekah Lodge No. 53 of White Sulphur Springs and the ancient Mystic Order of Samaritan, Aden Sanctorum No. 228 of Clifton Forge. Born in Monroe County, WV, Oct. 23, 1868, he was the son of the late Anderson and Martha Vaughan Vass. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. L. G. East, Low Moor,VA, and Mrs. H. G. Smith, Holly Hill, FL; two sons, Rex Vass, New York City and Oscar Ray Vass, MM3, U.S. Navy, aboard the Destroyer U.S. Hale. The funeral service will be held from Emmanuel Methodist Church, White Sulphur Springs, Wednesday at 2 p.m. conducted by the Rev. S. D. Rexrode. Internment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, White Sulphur Springs with graveside rites by I.O.O.F. Lodge of Covington. Members of the I.O.O.F. Lodge will serve as active pallbearers and members of the Rebekah Lodge will carry flowers. The body will remain at the Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, until one hour before the service when it will be taken to the church.
