WATCHMAN, Vol. 36, Num. 3; Thursday, Feb. 14, 1907: "On Feb. 6, 1907, at her home near Rupert, Greenbrier county, Mrs. Jennie Neal COOK, aged about 80 years." "On Jan. 31, 1907, at her home at Caldwell, of cancer, Mrs. Mollie CRAWFORD, aged about 35 years, wife of King CRAWFORD." *********************************************************************** OBIT: Mrs. Rose Cheitham, 75, of Hinton died Wednesday, January 12, 1972, in Summers County Hospital after a two week illness. Born March 22, 1896, in Monroe County, she was a daughter of the late Jackson and Henrietta Bare Gunoe. She had lived in Hinton for the past 58 years and was a member of the Riverview Chapel in Hinton. Survivors include: husband, Charles T. of Hinton; son, Billy J. of Hampton, VA; daughters, Mrs. Mildred Briers of Hinton; Mrs. Margaret Mason of Richmond, VA; 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Riverview Chapel in Hinton with the Rev. Harry Pilkington, Rev. D. D. Elwee and Rev. Fred Dillion officiating. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery at Ronceverte. The body is at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Home in Hinton where friends may call after 3 p.m. today. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service. [Submitted by Louise Perkins , September 20, 1998] ************************************************************************** Greenbrier Independant Oct 27 1898 Sudden Death The many friends of Joseph C. Caraway, of Renick's valley, this County, Were shocked to hear of his death, which occured near Alderson, on Wednesday, the 26th ult. Mr Caraway had left his home at Renick's Valley for the purpose of visiting relatives and friends in Blue Sulphur district, accompanied by two of his little daughters. On the day of his death he was at the home of his brother-in law, Archibald Lipps,Esq., near Alderson, and in the afternoon started with his little girls to go to the home of Mr. Robert Hunt, about a mile distant from Mr. Lipps'. At a spring along the route he stopped, telling his daughters to go on and that he would soon overtake them. Shortly after Miss Aura Stevens and her brother Wade, who were returning to their home from Alderson, found him lying dead at the spring. He had evidently been suddenly stricken with heart disease or apoplexy. An inquest was deemed unnecessary. Mr Caraway was about 60 years old, an old Confederate soldier, a good citizen, and highly respected by all who knew him. He leaves a wife and eleven children. His body was taken to his home in Renicks Valley for interment. Caraway, widow of the late Joseph Caraway. Died at the John Hopkins hospital in Baltimore last Sunday evening, May 2, 1909. age 62 years. She had gone to the hospital to undergo an operation for dropsical tumor, but passed away before it was attempted. She was a daughter of the late George Hunter and was born in Greenbrier county. Her home for many years has been at Renick's Valley. where she was buried Tuesday morning. She was the mother of fourteen children, twelve of whom survive. Her husband dropped dead near Alderson some ten years ago while going from the home of A.R.Lipps to that of John G. Stevens. Craft Dies at Alderson: Word has been received here by relatives of the death of Mrs. Mary C. Craft, at the home of her son-in-law at Alderson, WV., Tuesday morning. Mrs. Craft was 87 years old. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Alice Traynor, of Covington, and one granddaughter, Miss Bessie Arrington of Alderson. Her husband and one daughter preceded her in death a number of years ago. [Submitted by Louise Perkins ] ************************************************************************** OBIT: Sat. 21 Mar 1992-WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS-Mrs. Nora Helen Campbell, 77, of White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., died Friday at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, W. Va. She was born at Sweet Chalybeate Oct. 6, 191, a daughter of the late Lonnie and Lettie Harvey Hepler. She attended the Pentacostal Holiness Church in White Sulphur Springs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence M. Campbel,l in 1958 an one daughter Doris M. Depriest, in 1974. She is survived by one son, Paul M. Campbel,l of White Sulphur Springs; one daughter, Mrs. Bonnie Graham, of White Sulphur Springs, one sister, Mrs. Francis Campbell, of White Sulphur Springs; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Shanklin Funeral Home in White Sulphur Springs with the Rev. Michael Edds, the Rev. Myles Bittinger and the Rev. Lon Miller officiating. Interment will follow in Alvon Presbyterian Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. [Submitted by Louise Perkins ] ************************************************************************** Mrs. Mary Aretta Carter, aged 81 years, of Fort Springs, died Sunday, December 13, 1987 at a Richmond, Va. hospital following a long illness. Born Nov. 26, 1906 on Muddy Creek Mountain, she was the daughter of the late James S. and Mary Burns Highlander. Mrs. Carter was a lifelong resident of Fort Springs, attended the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church at Fort Springs and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wiliam H. Carter, Jr.; a daughter, Phyllis J. Carter, and a son, Charles C. Carter. Survivors include five daughters, Margie Fulcher and Joan Massie, both of Fort Springs, Anna Mae Bishop of Martinsville, Va., Drema Satterwhite of Richmond, Va., and Patty Rothe of Lewisburg; seven sons, James W. Harold Roy and Mike Carter, all of Fort Springs, Lloyd and Floyd Carter, both of Ronceverte, and Richard Carter of Alderson; a sister, Icle Mashaud of Bedford, Maine; 39 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Services were held Wednesday at the Longanacre Funeral Home in Fort Springs with the Revs. Stewart Farley and Roy Gwinn officiating. Burial followed in the Mount Vernon Cemetery at Fort Springs.
