Obituary: Winnebago County, Wisconsin: Luella (Grannis) BARNES ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, December 2004 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.org/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ Winneconne Local May 3, 1917 p.1 Mrs. Luella Barnes, a former resident of this village, died at the Wisconsin Veterans Home, April 2, aged nearly sixty-seven years. Luella Grannis was born in Massachusetts, May 12, 1850, and spent her early life in Oberlin, Ohio. She came to Wisconsin in 1868 with her sister, Mrs. Oliver Arcy, and was a student in the Normal at Whitewater, of which her brother-in-law was president. After several years of teaching she took up the profession of music, which she followed very successfully for years in Milwaukee and Chicago. In 1895, she married D. J. Bardwell of Omro. After the death of her husband she came to Winneconne in 1901. Here see was married to B.M. Barnes in the spring of 1904 and removed with him to Waupaca in the fall of 1909. After the death of Mr. Barnes in 1914 she went to the Veterans' Home to spend her remaining days. She had long been a sufferer from heart disease which was the cause of her death. Mrs. Barnes was most excellent Christian lady, who possessed many rare qualities of mind and heart and had made many friends who will sadly miss her. The funeral was held at the chapel and interment was in the local cemetery.
