He was born September 24, 1844 in Wilsewrath, Amt Hadmer, Germany. He came to America with his parents when he was 9 years old. They settled at Ithaca, N.Y. During the Civil War he was employed as a night watchman at the New York Central Railroad Station. After the war he came with his parents to Jefferson City, Mo. Then they returned to Canasota, N.Y. In 1866 he came to Trempealeau County and settled in Bill's Valley, south of Arcadia, Wis. On January 19, 1877 he married Anna Sluga of Elk Creek, Wis. The marriage took place in the Myers Valley St. Peter and Paul church. The first church in Arcadia was built in 1885. They had 12 children, 6 died in infancy. Eight years ago they retired from farming and built a nice home opposite the farm in Bill's Valley. Here he died on January 17, 1914. Since March of 1913 he has been ailing from heart trouble. He took treatment at Prairie du Chien and St. Francis hospital at La Crosse but never regained his health. He leaves his wife and 6 children: Mrs. W. H. Burr, Ocean Park, Calif.; Joseph, Arcadia, Wis.; Mrs. A. M. Boland, Arcadia, Wis.; Mrs. P. P. Filla, Independence, Wis.; Miss Agness Bill, La Crosse; Ed G. Bill, Winona, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Charles Haines, Arcadia; Mrs. Engelhart Doelle, Ft. City; Mrs. Nic Kant, New Hartford, N.Y. The funeral was Wednesday at the Glencoe Catholic Church. Rev. J. L. Hauck officiating. A large granite monument with the name Bill marks his final resting place at the St. Joseph's Church Cemetery in Glencoe, 2 miles west of Arcadia. Wis. - Newspaper unknown.
