MADISON - Robert W. Lyons, age 82, of Madison, died peacefully in his sleep at home on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006. He was born Aug. 5, 1924, in Clyman. Bob was the son of William and Bridget (Caughlin) Lyons. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1942. Bob enlisted in the Army in March 1943, during World War II. His basic training was with the 78th Infantry Division in Camp Butner, N.C. In May 1944 he joined 29th Infantry Division, 116th Regiment that landed at Omaha Beach on D-Day. On Aug. 6, 1944, he was wounded in action and was awarded the Purple Heart medal. His unit remained there another five months as part of the occupation forces in Germany. He married Eileen J. Booth on May 7, 1947. They moved to Madison where he worked at the Madison Kipp Corporation for 15 years, followed by 30 years with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Highway sign manufacturing shop. He retired in August 1987. Survivors include his wife, Eileen; three children, Maurene of Madison, Terri (Sanford) Lyles of Madison, and William Lyons of Tustin, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Gordon Robert and Alicia Anne Simle of Madison, Bridget, Robert and Jacob Lyons of California. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, John P. Lyons. The family expresses deep gratitude to the staff of HospiceCare for their loving care of Bob in his final years. Bob and Eileen felt the HospiceCare staff became like family to them. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to HospiceCare, 5395 East Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711. The children would like to thank their Mother, Eileen for her strength, loving care and devotion, which made it possible for Dad to live at home until his death. Bob maintained his dignity and humor while fighting the challenges of his illness. He always gave generously of himself and his time. He always put others before himself. He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life and spending time with family. His hobbies included woodworking, listening to big band music, gardening and nature. His sense of humor and spirit will be greatly missed by those who had the privilege of knowing him. A visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 6021 University Ave., Madison. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at ST. THOMAS AQUINAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 602 Everglade Drive, Madison, with Father Donn Heiar presiding. There will be a one hour visitation prior to services.
