Gunter, 80, of Longview, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on November 18, 2005. He was born September 13, 1925 in Perry, Florida to Henry Thomas and Edith Ione (Carlton) Gunter. William grew up in Florida as the fourth of 9 children. William responded to the call of duty by entering the Army on October 29, 1944. He was subsequently captured at the Battle of the Bulge, and survived four months of captivity, in Zeitz, Germany before being liberated. In 1947, William moved to Longview. He worked in the timber industry and retired, as a fork lift operator, from Weyerhaeuser Company, after 25 years, in 1987. William was a stoic and gentle husband and father, and was a selfless provider. With his quiet wisdom and kind heart, he was a source of strength and inspiration to all. William derived great happiness from the simple pleasures of life. His favorite activities included visits with his family, gardening, fishing, bird-watching, a good book, and a ballgame on the radio. He was an exceptional cook, specializing in good, old-fashion southern cuisine. William was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie E. Gunter; his parents; and 4 siblings, Leroy Gunter of Longview, Lois Whiddon of Perry, Florida, Avord Gunter of Longview and Callie Mae Mills of Perry, Florida. He is survived by his siblings, Geraldine Leggett of Longview, Hullon Gunter of Eugene, Jane Donaldson of Redmond, Washington and Thomas Gunter of Longview. He is also survived by his children, Robert Gunter of Longview, James Gunter of Kelso, Carol Brown of Honolulu, Hawaii, Marlene Gunter of Longview, Sandra Tedder of San Francisco, California and Elaine Eisele of Longview. In addition he is survived by his best friend, Joyce French; and 10 grandchildren, 3 great- grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funereal services will be held at Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend W.C. Thurman officiating. The viewing will be held today from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and on Wednesday November 23, 2005 from 10:00 a.m. until service.
