John E. Whitfield 79, retired farmer of this community died this afternoon at the home of a daughter Mrs. M. E. (Bessie Whitfield) Bradshaw, after a long illness. He was the son of John and Louise Joyner Whitfield, of Southampton County, and had been a Member of Black Creek Baptist Church since early childhood. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Bradshaw and Mrs. Irene Collier of Portsmouth; four sons H. B. Whitfield of Portsmouth John L. Whitfield of Franklin; George M. and Reese Whitfield. of Norfolk; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild; three brothers, W. K. Whitfield of Ivor; S. T. Whitfield of Richmond, three sisters, Mrs. Leigh Presson of Dendron and Mrs.Nannie Johnson, of Ivor. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at Black Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. W.B. Watson and the Rev. Shirley Whitfield. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
