All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.org/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.org/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ MARY JANE GARDNER VAUGHAN Mrs. Janie Gardner Vaughan, 73, resident of the Sycamore community, Southampton County, died early Saturday afternoon, August 24, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edward V. Howell, on the Smith’s Ferry Road after an illness of many months. Mrs. Vaughan was the widow of Hillary Lee Vaughan and a daughter of the late Jesse D. and Mrs. Margaret Cotton Gardner of Southampton County. She was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church and its Woman’s Missionary Society and was teacher of the T.E.L. class for many years. In addition to Mrs. Howell, she is survived by two other daughters, Mrs. Charles V. Darden of Portsmouth and Mrs. James W. Marshall of Richmond; three sons, H. Leroy Vaughan, H. Cecil Vaughan and Ashley M Vaughan, all of Franklin; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Ada G. Cobb of Franklin; one half-brother, Jesse D. Gardner of Franklin; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Monday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Home by Rev. Vivian W. Evans, pastor of Sycamore Baptist Church, and Rev. L.M. Kanipe, pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church, Wise County, and a former pastor of Sycamore. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Hunter Darden, Sr., Vernard Cotton, Willie Cotton, Ryland Edwards, Otto Harcum and Lawless Cobb. [Mary Jane "Janie" (GARDNER; Mrs. Hillary L.)
