Porter William Herman Porter, 72, well known resident of Newsoms, died early Sunday morning, December 15, in Raiford Memorial Hospital, Franklin, after a short illness. He was the husband of Mrs. Martha Cook Porter of Newsoms, and the son of the late W. David and Mrs. Sally Cornwell Porter of Southampton County. He was a retired farmer and a member of Mount Horeb Methodist Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Annie Hedgepeth of Courtland, Mrs. Bessie Seldomridge of Franklin and Mrs. Arie Wilkins and Mrs. Lydia Griggs, both of Suffolk; three sons, W. Marvin Porter and Cecil Lawrence Porter of Franklin and Ray L. Porter of Handsom; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. J. W. Sammons of Portsmouth; two brothers, A. Percy Porter and J. L. Porter, both of Newsoms, and one half- brother, J. D. Porter of Portsmouth. Funeral services were conducted Monday at 1 p.m., in the chapel of the W. J. M. Holland and Sons Funeral Home by Rev. O. L. Gochenour, pastor of Mount Horeb Methodist Church. Burial was in Newsoms Cemetery. Active pallbearers were J. C. Story, John Worrell, Emmett E. Drake, Lee Raiford, Harry Fowler, Donald Rountree, Fred Worrell and James O'Berry.
