All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.org/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.org/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JORDAN BEALE POWELL FORMER COMMISSIONER DIES FRIDAY MORNING AFTER MONTH'S ILLNESS Hurt in an accident at the Country Club on December 17, when he broke his leg just below the hip, and suffering from complications which failed yield to treatment, Dr. Jordan Beale Powell, former Town Commissioner, died Friday morning, February 2, in Raiford Memorial Hospital, to which he was carried following his injury. Dr. Powell was the husband of Mrs. Margaret Edwards Powell of Franklin, who survives him, and a son of the late Godwin Moore and Cornelia Ann Holloman Powell of Hertford County. N.C., where he was born July 2, 1885. Moving to Norfolk in early manhood, he entered the employ of Jacob Bennett, jeweler. In August, 1906, he graduated from the Philadelphia College of Horology and Optics. For several years, he was associated with an elder brother, Dr. John Mills Powell, in the firm of Powell Brothers, Jewelers and optometrists, later conducting the business alone. For the past three years he had been associated with Dr. Ernest B. Gatten, Jr., in the practice of optometry, with offices at 106 Third Avenue. He was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church and its Bruner Bible class, the Shriners, and the Lions Club. From 1942 to 1950 he was a member of the Town Commission. Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Dr. Jordan Beale Powell, Jr., of Ahoskie, N.C.; a granddaughter, Margaret Gatling Powell, also of Ahoskie; a sister, Mrs. J.A. Murphy of Boston, Mass; two brothers, Dr. C.G. Powell of Ahoskie and Dr. John Mills Powell of Galax; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the graveside in Poplar Spring Cemetery at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, with Revs. Randolph Gregory and Elmer N. Hassell officiating, following by Masonic rites. Active pallbearers were W.R. Atkinson, Robert E. Coggsdale, Dr. E. B. Gatten, Jr., J. Burnett Johnson, Dr. Darden W. Jones, Emerson Jones, G. Hinson Parker and W. Wilkinson.
