Babb was born in Isle of Wight county, Va., September 5, 1856, and passed away at his home near Corinth in Southampton county, March 15, 1920. He was member of a family of seven children, and a a very early age, they were deprived of a fath- er's care by death. He, thus be- ing thrown upon his own resources early in life, developed those ster- ling qualities of character, indus- try and perseverance, which won for him a place of esteem in the business interests of the county. On December 19, 1885, at "Old Friends Black Creek," he was un- ited in marriage, according to the Friends ceremony, to Hannah C. Brantley. To this union were born eight children, three of whom have already preceeded him to the "Glory Land," two in infancy and the eldest son, J. Stanley Babb, over a year ago. In early manhood he made a pub- lic profession of faith in Christ, and soon afterward united with the Friends Church of which commun- ion, he remained a member through his life, being a faithful attendant upon the same during the ac- tive period of his life. In disposition he was of even temperament, mild and of a kindly spirit, sincere and upright in all his relations with others. He was greatly afflicted in the latter years of his life and during his last sick- ness was confined to his bed for several weeks. Every effort was made by his family for his recov- ery, but all in vain, and he passed away quietly to rest, in the assur- ance of faith. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Livingstone H. and E. Mc- Cauley; three daughters, Miss Isla Gertrude, Mrs. G. T. Partridge of Yale, Va., Mrs. H. W. Hines of Boykins, Va.; by two brothers, and three sisters, and a number of nieces and nephews to mourn their loss. In his passing the communi- ty suffers an irreparable loss.
