He was born May 14, 1951, in Payson, Utah, to Rodger and Wanda Hansen Garrett. He married Sharon Kay, September 3, 1971, in Nephi, Utah. He graduated from Juab High School in 1969. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He worked for NRP for 29 years in handmade hose. Gordon was a member of the Nephi Jaycees and served in many capacities, including President and Regional Director for the state. He loved the Jaycees and especially being able to help with Santa. He loved camping, boating, hunting, fishing, and riding his motorcycle. He loved the outdoors and spent many hours outside. Survived by his wife, Sharon, of Nephi; son, Raymond (Candace) Garrett, of Payson; daughter, Lisa (Todd) Fowles, of West Valley City; two grandchildren: Sara and Scott Fowles; sister, Gayle (Jerry) Steele. Preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Phyllis Christiansen. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, November 9, 2004, in the Nephi 5th Ward at 345 E. 500 North. Friends may call Monday evening from 6-8 p.m.; and, one hour prior to the services, at the church, in Nephi. Ortiz, Valerie Rae Petersen After spending much of her life sharing her love with others and showing us how to serve by her Christ-like example, Valerie Rae Petersen Ortiz has returned to her Heavenly Father to join her loved ones on the other side of the veil. Valerie was born on May 23, 1948, to Curtis Haskell and Linnea Brinck Petersen in South Gate, California. She passed peacefully, with her family by her side, on November 5, 2004, at 2:15 a.m., after fighting a short, but courageous, battle with cancer. She was educated in Bell Gardens and West Covina, CA, and later attended Ricks College, Idaho. On May 6, 1978, she married her sweetheart, Guillermo Ortiz, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Their lives were blessed by four strong and healthy boys: Jonathan Tolentino, Daniel (Gina) Ortiz, Steven Ortiz, who recently returned home after serving his country in the military, and Peter (Angie) Ortiz. Valerie was also very proud of her 11 wonderful grandchildren. She is also survived by her mother, Linnea Petersen, of Payson, UT: and her husband, Guillermo. She will be deeply missed by her sister, Sharee (Kent) Burton, of Elk Ridge, UT; and her brothers: Ron (Ramona) Petersen, of Santaquin, UT; Guy (Rhonda) Petersen, of Sacramento, CA; and Brad (Sandra) Petersen, of Huntington Beach, CA. She was preceded in death by her beloved father, and her grandparents. Valerie was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved the gospel and her Savior. She was happiest surrounded by her family and took special delight in her new little granddaughter, Savannah. She enjoyed the outdoors, travel, and discovering new places with her family and friends. Valerie worked as a nurses aide and enjoyed doing home health care. She had a deep and special love for the elderly and the homebound patients she cared for, and they loved her. More than once, she received the award as "CNA of the Year." Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 9, 2004, at 11 a.m., at the Payson South Stake Center, 711 South 600 East, Payson, UT. Friends and family may call in the Relief Society room at 10 a.m., prior to the funeral. Interment will be at the Payson Cemetery immediately following the funeral service. Published in the Daily Herald on 11/8/2004. Plank, Joyce Leavitt Joyce Leavitt Plank, 66, of Payson, passed away Saturday, November 6, 2004, of natural causes. She was born December 20, 1937, in Mesquite, NV, to Royal Dean and Rosa Tobler Leavitt. Joyce grew up in Mesquite and attended school there. She later attended two years of college in Utah & Nevada. Joyce was a very talented writer, which included poetry, short stories, and novels. She enjoyed singing and playing piano and had many other talents. She is survived by her four children: Robert Bruce (Angelica) Hallock, Provo; Melanie Rose (Elstan) Peck, Payson; Kenneth Scott (Shannon) Pena, Logan; Julie April Plank, Provo; sixteen grandchildren; a great-grandson; and father, Royal Dean (Connie) Leavitt, Payson. Additional survivors include siblings: Viola Wells; Leo Leavitt; twin sister, Janice (John) Walden; and Iren (Sonia) Leavitt. She was preceded in death by her mother in 1999. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 9, 2004, at 2 p.m., in the Olpin Family Mortuary Chapel, 494 South 300 East, Pleasant Grove, where friends may call one hour prior to services.
