Cox Memorial Funeral Home DEL RIO — Crawford Frank Mitchell was born July 11, 1921, in Marfa, Texas, to Thomas Loyd and Ruth Mitchell. He spent most of his life ranching in the Rocksprings area. He is survived by two daughters, Jacklyn Bonner and husband, Sid, and Martha Mitchell; one son, Samuel Clay Mitchell and wife, Marla; grandchildren, Kristi McDonald and husband, Terry, John Crawford Bonner and wife, Tami, Shanna Beth McDonald and husband, Scott, Clint Mitchell Germany and wife, Cristina, Sarah Claye and Rachel Ayn Mitchell; three great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Collin and Shayla; brothers, Loyd Mitchell and wife, Dorothy Faye, and Bill Mitchell and wife, Norma; and sisters, Mary Louise Glynn and Ro Clark; along with numerous nephews and nieces. Crawford, also known to many as “Pancho,” served in the United States Army/Calvary during World War II. After his service he returned to the Rocksprings area to ranch. One of his favorite pastimes was calf roping with brothers and friends. Later he developed a passion for Angora Goats. He dedicated a large portion of his life and time to helping 4-H members and fellow ranchers with their Angora Goats and mohair. He was a Texas Angora Goat Raisers Association judge for many years and loved working with the youngsters, teaching them how to grade mohair. During shearing season you could find him at neighboring ranches grading sack after sack of mohair or just lending a helping hand. Many of his friends knew his love for welding and building and have barns, pens and bump gates made by Crawford throughout the surrounding counties. Crawford also was very well known for his cooking. Everyone loved his goat meat and brisket but most of all, his famous camp bread. He catered for many years, cooking for hundreds of people and gatherings. Most will remember him for the Fourth of July in Rocksprings, with all the other men early in the morning starting the fire and getting the meat on. In the earlier years, he was a very active member in the American Legion which promoted the Fourth of July Rodeo in Rocksprings. One of Crawford’s pastimes away from the ranch was spent at Rough Canyon on Lake Amistad. There he made many life-long friends, catching catfish and spending late nights frying fish to feed all whom would come eat it. He was active in this small community and ran the Marina for a time. Crawford had many extended families. One of the more recent passions was his participation in the Texas Sheep Dog Association. After getting his first Border Collie, he became addicted and learned all about training them himself. With the help of the friends he made at all the dog trials, he learned to train and trade the dogs he grew to love so much. His family never saw any other breed of dog with Crawford and never would. He spent his whole life instilling in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the values of hard work, responsibility and friendship. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends from the surrounding communities. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, at the funeral home. A rosary will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, at Holy Angels Church in San Angelo. A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, at Holy Angels Church in San Angelo with Father Charles Greenwell officiating. Francis (Uncle Frank) was born on April 20, 1920, in Binghamton, N.Y. He graduated from St. Stanislaus Kostka School and St. Patrick’s Academy. He was the son of the late Theodore and Hedwig (Krolak) Witkowski. Frank worked for the former Endicott Johnson Shoe Corp. as a cost accountant for nearly 40 years. He also served in the United States Army for two years. After his retirement, he moved to Rantoul, Ill., and worked as a security guard for the Solo Cup Company and the Bell Helmet Company. During this time, the joy of his life was his loving great-niece, Michele, great-nephew, Joey, and a dog named Niki. In 1992, he moved to San Angelo, Texas, to enjoy walking, playing lotto and to just enjoy another part of God’s beautiful country. He will be greatly missed by his loving family. Surviving are a sister, Mary Anne Zapala and her husband, Bill, and a nephew, Joe Zapala and his wife, Donna Kay, all of San Angelo. Frank was preceded in death by a sister, Sister M. Marguerite Witkowski of the Bernardine Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, and a brother, Edward Witkowski. The family wishes to thank Dr. John Granaghan, the staff at the San Angelo Community Hospital and West Texas Medical Assoc., and the loving care given to Frank by the staff at Park Plaza Nursing Home and Hospice of San Angelo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Holy Angels Church building fund. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
