Coleman, 92, of Rockport passed away Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at her home in Rockport. Nelle was born in San Angelo, Texas, April 25, 1908, to Kenneth and Bess (Yates) Copeland, as the eldest granddaughter of Ira G. and Annie S. Yates, for whom the town of Iraan was named and on whose Pecos County ranch the fabulous Yates Oil Field was discovered in 1926. She was educated under a governess on that ranch, in the public schools of Rankin and Fort Stockton and at Draughon Business College in Abilene. A longtime resident of San Angelo, Nelle moved to Comanche following her May 7, 1953, marriage to Tom A. Coleman of that city. She kept her ties to West Texas throughout her lifetime, though she had maintained part-time residences in Rockport for some 40 years, including one of the first homes in the now-renowned Key Allegro complex. Earlier in life, Nelle was known and respected as a ranchwoman and horsewoman, enjoying rodeos, horse shows and hunting. Lately, although she regularly took part in an annual dove hunt, her interests largely turned to politics and current events, to genealogy, to the discerning collection of the works of contemporary regional artists, and to extensive worldwide travel. Nelle was generous in her support of community and regional civic groups, charitable organizations and religious activities. She was a benefactor for more than half a century of the West Texas Rehabilitation Center and the West Texas Boys Ranch in the San Angelo area, and a charter member of Rockport's Texas Maritime Museum and of the Rockport Center for the Arts. Her many years of service to her church, Comanche's St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, included membership in the Altar Guild and in the Women of the Church. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Tom A. Coleman of Comanche; a brother and sister-in-law, Gay Y. and Esther Copeland of San Antonio; nephews and nieces, Stuart Coleman of Brownwood, Ralph Copeland of Crane, Richard Copeland of San Antonio, Saundra Winokur-Ghorab of Elmendorf, Gail Bartlett of Austin and Gayle Copeland of San Antonio; seven grandnieces and grand-nephews; 11 great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews; close friend and longtime business manager, Charles Stephens of Rockport; and special friend Zinnia Grigar of Rockport. Family members wish to express their deepest gratitude to her devoted and dedicated caregivers during her final illness, Sarah Pulido, Joan Sheaves and Rose Goodwill; and to Dr. Jack Brackin, MD, medical director, Mary Chapin, RN, administrative director, and other staff of Rockport's AIM Hospice. Interment at the Yates Family plot in San Angelo's Fairmount Cemetery will follow a brief graveside service conducted by the Rev. Dr. Richard Copeland, scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, July 1, with friends and family members, Charles Stephens, Jim Dudley, John Dudley, the Honorable James Meyers, Stuart Coleman and Ralph Copeland as pallbearers. Arrangements are entrusted to Charlie Marshall Funeral Home of Rockport in conjunction with Johnson's Funeral Home of San Angelo. At a later date still to be determined, it is expected that memorial services will be held at St. Mathew's Episcopal Church in Comanche. The family requests memorials to Nelle's favorite charities, to her church or to the AIM Hospice, P.O. Box 2300, Rockport, TX 78382.
