Walter was extremely active in the community with the Salvation Army, as chairman for the Concho Valley Red Cross, swimming instructor, first-aid instructor, Boy Scouts and PTA. He was a blacksmith, an inventor, welder and foundryman. He retired as an aircraft welder at Goodfellow Air Force Base. He owned City Welding Shop and retired to his Ballinger shop. He is survived by a son, Jimmie D. While in college Shawn played baseball, served as minister of youth at the First Baptist Church of Bronte and served with the Leadership Council of the Baptist Student Ministry, where he and Kathy Jo met. He married Kathy Jo Muirhead Dec. 20, 1997, in Eastland and together they enjoyed a marriage rooted in God's love. They returned to Fort Worth to continue his education. He was a student at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary seeking to receive his master of arts in Christian education. He and Kathy Jo served as Sunday school teachers at Wedgwood Baptist Church for sixth grade students. He was employed by New Horizons where he was a mental health program assistant. Shawn was a light of God's love to all who knew him. His passion to follow the Lord's plan in youth ministry was evident in every aspect of his life. Glenn was born to Jesse and Elma Banfield on Oct. 2, 1898, in Stuttgart, Ark. The family moved by covered wagon to El Campo in the early 1900s. Glenn served in the U.S. Navy during World War I on the battleship USS Nevada. After the war he returned to farming in El Campo and married Florence Byerley Feb. 22, 1927, she preceded him in death Aug. 27, 1988. He continued farming until the late 1940s and also became a carpenter during World War II. As a carpenter he was involved with the construction of military bases in Victoria and Palacios. In 1950 he moved his family to San Angelo and continued carpentering until his retirement in the late 1970s. As the eldest living World War I veteran in San Angelo, Glenn, was a member of the Veterans of World War I Tom Green County Barracks 1537 until it disbanded. Currently he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 1815 and the American Post 572. As a farmer he was an active member of the Rice Association in El Campo. Glenn completed 50 years of continuous membership in the Carpenters Local 108 and was granted life membership in the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America in 1997. He has also held numerous positions of leadership in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) including his latest appointment as elder emeritus at Community Christian Church in San Angelo. As the eldest living World War I veteran in San Angelo, Glenn, was a member of the Veterans of World War I Tom Green County Barracks 1537 until it disbanded. Currently he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 1815 and the American Post 572. As a farmer he was an active member of the Rice Association in El Campo. Glenn completed 50 years of continuous membership in the Carpenters Local 108 and was granted life membership in the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America in 1997. He has also held numerous positions of leadership in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) including his latest appointment as elder emeritus at Community Christian Church in San Angelo. JAMES EDWARD SHEPPARD James Edward Sheppard passed from this life on Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999. He was 77 years old. Mr. Sheppard was born March 29, 1922, in Lafe, Ark. His parents were L.F. and Lydia Seat Sheppard. He was married to Alice Cheatham on Sept. 21, 1946. They enjoyed 53 happy years together. Mr. Sheppard was a decorated World War II Navy veteran, serving in the European and Pacific Theatres. He received a B.S. degree in 1950 from Abilene Christian University and a masters degree in education in 1953 from Hardin-Simmons University. After a successful career as a respected administrator in the San Angelo public schools, he retired in 1983. He is survived by his wife, Alice; three children, Claudia Kling and husband, Dwight, Phyllis Goncalves and husband, Antenor, Randy Sheppard and wife, Sally; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother; and two sisters. He is also survived by many dear extended family members and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and three sisters. Tom was born in Fort Worth and moved to Bronte in 1970 and attended school here before moving to Rankin where he graduated from high school. He then attended and graduated from Western Texas College in Snyder with a degree in golf course administration and landscaping. He also was employed in the oil field as a derrick hand while in school. He owned and operated Weedwarriors Landscape Service in the Marble Falls and Horseshoe Bay area. Tom was a member of the Baptist church. We may not see him walking daily, but he will live forever in our hearts and our memories. Thomas, better known to some as T.J. and others, Tom, was a very kindhearted person. It seemed as though he never met a stranger nor did he ever forget a friend. Thomas was always there to help a friend in need. He loved to travel and find new adventures and roads to travel through during his road of life. He was an extremely hard-working man, willing to do any job to provide for his family. The family requests memorials be made to a senior citizens organization of choice. BOBBY VERNON DOVE EDEN - Bobby Vernon Dove, 72, passed away Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, in Eden. Born April 19, 1927, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. H.E. Dove, both deceased. Mr. Dove was a member of the Church of Christ and grew up in Fort Stockton and graduated from Fort Stockton High School. He served in the Navy during World War II. He earned three years of college before entering pilot training at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo in 1948. Bobby Dove worked for 16 years in San Angelo as manager and stockholder in B&H Hardware & Ranch Supply Inc. In 1968 he moved to Longview, taking a position with Comchemco Inc. He retired and moved to Eden, where he lived at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Billie Dove of Eden; and two sons, Marc Dove of Los Angeles, his wife, Julia, and their two sons, Zachery and Seth, and Mathew Dove and his wife, Kathy, of Waco, and their children, Paxton Dove of Austin, Patrick and Payton Dove of Waco, and Joann Dove of Salt Lake City; and one great-grandchild, Araya. He was born Aug. 17, 1901, in Olfen to Emil and Lena Schnieder Halfmann. He moved to Westoff as a young man where he married Sophie Boehm on Sept. 23, 1922. They farmed in Orange Grove then moved to Runnels County in 1937 where they lived, worked and enjoyed life together while raising their family. They retired and moved to Rowena in 1979. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rowena. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 77 years who passed away Aug. 9, 1999; also four grandsons; three granddaughters; one brother, Anton Halfmann; one sister, Margaret Fiedler; and one daughter-in-law, Nora Mae Halfmann. He graduated from San Angelo Central High School in 1987. He served four years in the United States Army. In May 1998, he graduated from Angelo State University. Tom was a science teacher and athletic coach at Edison Junior high School. He is survived by his wife of six years, Christie Rustad, and his mother, Connie Rustad, both of San Angelo; grandfather, Cleo Butts of Ballinger; and an aunt and uncle, Peggy and Jack Cowan of San Angelo. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Mrs. Tullis had just recently celebrated 59 years of marriage to Dr. David S. Tullis. Mrs. Tullis was known as a caring and innovative educator throughout her 40 years of teaching and school administration. In the course of her life she touched and transformed many lives. She was the principal at Crockett Elementary School until her retirement in the 1970s. In her retirement years she remained active in her church, as well as in various volunteer and civic organizations. She also was very devoted to her family and friends. Mrs. Tullis was born Beulah Delcy Baker on Sept. 30, 1917, in Payne County, Okla. She graduated valedictorian of her class at Panhandle A&M College in Goodwell, Okla., prior to embarking on a fulfilling career in education. She was a star basketball player in high school and college and later coached many winning basketball teams. Known to her family and friends as a loving, tough and inspirational individual, she will be greatly missed. She is survived by her husband, Dr. David S. Tullis of San Angelo; her two sons and their families, David and Barbara Tullis of Anchorage, Alaska, and their daughter, Jennifer, and Bill and Jane Tullis of Austin and their sons, Brandt and Gabe; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family requests memorials to be sent to the American Heart Association. HARRIE A. SMITH JR. HOUSTON - Harrie A. Smith Jr., 67, of Houston died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999. Mr. Smith was born Oct. 21, 1931, in Texon, where he also was an Eagle Scout. He attended schools in Texon, Big Lake and Midland where he excelled as an athlete in football, basketball and track. In 1950, he won the UIL State Championship in the 120 yard high hurdles. He attended Texas A&M University and later graduated from the University of Houston. Mr. Smith was a lifelong devotee to Texas. He enjoyed traveling all over the state which impressed him greatly. Smith, a fifth-generation Texan, was the great-great-grandson of Keeton Jones, who fought with Sam Houston at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. In all respects, Smith was a true son of Texas. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Bukley Smith; his parents, Harrie A. and Crystal Smith of Midland; and a son, Michael Cooley of Houston. Survivors include his daughter, Deborah Smith, sons, James Cooley, Harrie Cooley and David Cooley, all of Houston; sisters, Dana Smith Clifton of Bonham and Beverly Smith Wakefield of Odessa; and six grandchildren.
