Services are pending at McCoy Funeral Home. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Obituaries ELAINE MILLS KINSEY Elaine Kinsey, 97, was born in Canton, Texas, to Edward and Cora Mills on May 2, 1902. She died peacefully on Sunday, July 4, 1999, in Houston. She married Lloyd King Kinsey in 1930 and bore two sons, one of whom died in infancy. Her husband preceded her in death. ``Mama Lane,'' as she was known to her family and friends, leaves behind her son and daughter-in-law, James and Berma Kinsey of Houston; three grandchildren, Victoria, Samuel and Adam Kinsey; and Adam's wife, Keri; as well as two great-grandchildren, Ruben Espaillat and Stuart Kinsey. She also is survived by nine nieces and nephews and numerous grand- and great- grandnieces and nephews. She was a dedicated teacher who loved learning and her students. Among the attendees at her 95th birthday celebration were students she had taught more than 50 years ago. Mama Lane began her teaching career at the age of 18 and continued in that profession until her retirement in 1967, with the lapse of a few years of child raising. She earned a B.A. degree from East Texas State Teachers College in 1926 and an M.Ed. from Texas Tech University in 1951. She taught school for many years in San Angelo, which she considered her permanent home, and in Midland. She was a person of steadfast faith, great courage and a sense of adventure. She was strongly attached to her extended family and a circle of friends and former students with whom she maintained faithful correspondence and telephone contact. Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Friday, July 9, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens immediately after the ceremony. OTHO DUNCAN ROBERT LEE - Born July 26, 1904, near Rocky Comfort, Mo., Otho Duncan died June 23, 1999, in Robert Lee Care Center. While still in his teens, he moved to Kansas City, Mo., following his father's death to find work to save the family farm for his mother, brother and baby sister. Working the post office at night, cafeteria for meals, and stoking the college furnace, he earned his D.D.S. from Kansas City Western Dental College and passed the Texas and other dental licensing boards in 1929. Dr. Duncan opened his office the day the stock market crashed in 1929. On Dec. 31, 1931, he married Annabelle Saunders. As president of the Kansas City dental society in 1954, he fought for fluoridation for children's teeth to prevent decay. After passing the first American Board in Prosthetics in 1970, he was named a charter member of the American Board of Prosthodontists. Dr. Duncan retired at age 81. He had been in the Cavalry Reserve at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and various service, stock and horsemen's and Masonic organizations. Traveling the United States by train hauling the horses, he promoted Shriners' Crippled Children's Hospitals. Until almost 1950, he plowed and mowed with horses. He never lost his love of horses, family and humor. Dr. Duncan is survived by his daughter, Nancy Dunham, and grandson, Gregory M. Dunham of San Angelo; nephew, Ken Embrey of Siloam Springs, Ark.; granddaughter, Anne E. Rock of Laguna Hills, Calif.; and five great- grandchildren. Shirley was married to John A. ``Jack'' Pierce on July 31, 1945, in Kansas City, Kan., and he preceded her in death on Nov. 29, 1986. Mr. Pierce was retired from Goodfellow Air Force Base and was a professor in the business department at Angelo State University. He attended schools in Runnels County and Ballinger High School. He entered the U.S. Postal Service Nov. 2, 1923, in Ballinger, as part time clerk at 65 cents an hour. He served under postmasters J.A. Reese, Tom Caudle and K.V. Northington. He was made assistant postmaster in 1955, succeeding E.A. Saunders who passed away. He was appointed postmaster in November 1961, succeeding Mr. Northington, who also passed away while in office. He married Lovie Armstrong in Ballinger in June 1926, who passed away in 1963. He married Cordelia Johnson in Ballinger in 1965, a lifelong friend of the family. She passed away in 1992. Patterson was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church where he served for many years as a deacon, past chairman of the Deacons and many years as a Sunday school teacher and worker. He served many years as secretary of the Runnels County Water Authority. He was a member of the Ballinger Rotary Club and past secretary and past president of the club. He also was a member of the Ballinger Masonic Lodge 643, past secretary and past master and served the lodge as treasurer. He was a member of the Ballinger Chamber of Commerce for many years. Patterson was active in postmaster's organizations serving many years as ``official photographer'' of Texas postmasters. He was serving on the Ballinger Cemetery Board. He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Watkins and her husband, Carley, of Parker, Colo., and Sandra Winberg, and her husband, Paul, of Austin; six grandchildren, Lynn Watkins of Kingwood, Greg Watkins of Monument, Colo, Connie Heath of Aurora, Colo., and Grant Morgan, Quentin Morgan and Kristi Morgan, all of Austin. She was born July 21, 1905, in Hominy, Okla. Jonnie King married Hiram Edward Smelser in May 1922. Mr. Smelser preceded her in death. ETHIL MAE DAVIS ATHEY Ethil Athey, a longtime resident of San Angelo, died at her home on Thursday, July 10, 1999, after being diagnosed with cancer in June 1999. She was a loving wife, aunt and friend. Ethil was born March 17, 1917, the daughter of Marion William Davis and Edna Izella Sparlin in Anna, Collin County. She was married to J.B. Athey on July 17, 1935, in McCamey. J.B. retired from the Federal Aviation Administration and they lived in several cities in the United States before retiring in San Angelo. He was Upton County Constable for eight years and a member of the Rankin Country Club. He loved to fish and enjoyed a lake home in Box Canyon by Lake Amistad. Sully loved his family very much. His grandchildren were a special joy to him. BETTIE PAGE ROBERT LEE - Nancy Elizabeth ``Bettie'' Winston Snyder Page passed away Saturday, July 10, 1999, in Frankston where she had been residing, most recently at the Frankston Health Care Center. Bettie was born in Ellis County near Bardwell on Nov. 20, 1900. She was the oldest of six children born to Mathew Small and Loudie Ophelia Caston Winston. A graduate of Miles High School, she attended college in San Marcos, Kingsville and Alpine, later teaching school at Harriett and Robert Lee. Bettie met and married Harold Edwin Snyder in San Marcos and together, moved back to the Miles and San Angelo area where Harold died in 1937. They had one son, Lynn Elwood Snyder. After the death of her husband, Bettie lived with her parents in Miles until she moved to Robert Lee to teach at Wildcat School in 1944. In 1945, Bettie married Rolla Page and lived on his farm outside Robert Lee. In 1964, they moved into town. After Rolla Page passed away in 1972, Bettie remained in their home in Robert Lee, active as a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, a member of the choir there and participation in the Home Demonstration Club until 1990, then moving to East Texas in order to be near her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sister, May Winston and Loraine Winston Martin; and three brothers, Herbert Winston, Joe Winston and Fred Winston.
