Elias Klaerner FREDERICKSBURG - Elias ``Red'' Klaerner, 88, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997, in a local nursing home. Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Schaetter Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Der Stadt Friedhof. He was born June 10, 1909, in Gillespie County. An Army veteran of World War II, he was installation and service manager for Butane Co. He was the last survivor of the Fredericksburg Giants baseball team. Survivors include his wife, Lucille Schmidt Klaerner, and a sister, Christine Schneider, both of Fredericksburg; and two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law. ______________________________________________________________ HELEN FAY CARRUTHERS WALLER - Helen Fay Carruthers died Oct. 12, 1997, at her home in Waller, Texas, at the age of 48. She was born March 15, 1949, in Abilene, Texas. Mayrand passed away Monday, Oct. 13, 1997, in Columbia Medical Center. He was born Aug. 10, 1928, to Bernice and Ray Mayrand in Fond-du-lac, Wis. He graduated from St. Mary's Springs Academy and attended Marquette University in Milwaukee. He served as the finance officer for the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Angelo since 1970, in addition to operating his own business, David L. Mayrand & Associates, and treasurer of Robert Massie Funeral Home Inc. He was a member of Holy Angels parish and had served as a member of the Parish Council and Angelo Catholic School board. He was named a Papal Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in 1983. David is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Kathleen, and his daughters, Karen Mayrand and Dr. Leslie Mayrand, all of San Angelo; his beloved grandchildren, Kathleen Hutton and David Taylor; a sister, Mary Wempner of Fond-du-lac and her children, Scott and Anne. David will also be remembered by many friends and colleagues. The family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Columbia Medical Center, especially Mike Wood and the nurses in ICU and the rehabilitation unit. ALMA WEAVER DAVIDSON An earthly life of love, faith and dedication to God and her fellowman came to an end on Oct. 13, 1997. Alma Weaver Davidson was born Feb. 3, 1901, in Athens, Texas. She moved with her family to San Angelo at an early age and attended school in San Angelo and Texas Woman's College in Denton. On Nov. 3, 1923, she married J.H. Davidson. They celebrated 61 wedding anniversaries before Mr. Davidson's death Feb. 6, 1985. Mrs. Davidson taught school in San Angelo and several surrounding communities. She completed licensed vocational nurse training and worked at Shannon Hospital for a number of years. Mrs. Davidson joined the First Christian Church early in her life and faithfully attended and worked in the church until her health prevented her attending. Mrs. Davidson was a 50-year member of San Angelo Chapter 10, Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Davidson is survived by two sons, Richard M. Davidson of Garland, Texas, and John Lyndon Davidson of San Angelo; one daughter, Mrs. Joe (Jean) Bowles and her husband, Joe, of San Angelo; three grandchildren; and a number of nieces an nephews who were all very dear to her. The family wishes to extend to Baptist Memorials Center, the staff and personnel and to Hospice of San Angelo Inc., nurses and staff a very special ``thank you'' for the caring and concern during our mother's stay in the facility. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. FRANK W. HERRINGTON Frank W. Herrington, 101, of San Angelo died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1997, in Odessa. He was born May 8, 1896, in Hill County, Texas. He was married to Eva Lee Foster Dec. 24, 1922, in Taylor County, Texas. Frank enlisted in the U.S. Army on Oct. 8, 1917, until Aug. 13, 1919, when he was honorably discharged after returning from France where he served with the 132nd Field Artillery. During World War II he entered the Civil Service Commission and served in various Texas locations, including Goodfellow Air Force Base, as a member of the Fire Department. Besides being a member of Edmund Boulevard Baptist Church, he was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. Frank was preceded in death by his beloved wife on Aug. 23, 1993, and his son, Frank, on May 23, 1990. The family requests memorials be sent to the West Texas Rehabilitation Center or a favorite charity. Mr. Herrington is survived by two daughters, Corene Toner and her husband, Bill, of San Angelo and Eva Mae Wright and her husband, Frank, of Odessa; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, John Herrington of Arlington; three sisters, Dollie Hurt of Plainview, Kate Vinson of Waco and Jewel Lawrence of Llano. Burial will follow in Mertzon Cemetery. Frank was born June 21, 1925, to Frank Molina Sr. and Selfia Molina in Del Rio and was a lifetime resident of Mertzon. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Anita Longoria on Aug. 6, 1950, in Mertzon. Frank worked in civil service for 30 years until his retirement in 1984. He also worked for Service Merchandise for 16 years. He was a member of the Combat Infantryman Brotherhood and the American Legion and served as secretary for the city of Mertzon for many years. Frank is survived by his wife, Anita Molina of Mertzon; four children, Frank Molina III of Eldorado, Carl Molina and his wife, Delma, of Mertzon, Velma Vasquez and her husband, Alcario, of Mertzon and Wilma Rico and her husband, Catarino Jr., of Mertzon; one sister, Belia Armendarez of Mertzon; nine grandchildren, Tammy Hernandez of Big Lake, Jennifer Molina of Big Lake, Abel Molina of Eldorado, Bobby Rodriquez of San Angelo, Blas Molina, Cheyenne Vasquez, Amber Vasquez, Allison Vasquez and Montanah Vasquez, all of Mertzon; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Cierra and Matthew; mother-in-law, Clara Longoria of Mertzon; and an uncle, Chon Hinojosa of Mertzon. (We) I love you, Dad.-Don Ebie's Inspirations DAN KELLEY KIDD Dan Kelley Kidd of San Angelo passed away Monday, Oct. 13, 1997, at the age of 85. Dan was born Feb. 11, 1912, in Navasota, Texas, to Daniel and Maude Kelley Kidd. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Chapman Kidd, and three sisters, Ruth Adams, Elaine Godbold and Martha Kidd. Survivors include two sisters and a brother-in-law, Edith Cutbirth of Bellaire and Helen and Jack Frost of Columbus, Ohio; and a special friend, Nora Boswell of San Angelo. Dan was blessed with many nieces and nephews. Dan attended school in Navasota and was employed by Gulf Oil until World War II began. Dan served with distinction for four years in the U.S. Army in India and Burma. After the war, he moved to San Angelo in 1952 where he was in the hardware business and then employed by Columbia Medical Center until his retirement. Dan was past master of Concho Lodge 1260 and was a member of York Rite Bodies of San Angelo and a member of Suez Shrine Temple. He received the Golden Trowel Award for exceptional service from the Grand Lodge of Texas A.F.&A.M. He was a member of the Baptist church. Dan was an honorable and gentle man who was dearly loved by all who knew him, and he will be sorely missed. Service will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. JABE `JAKE' A. CALDWELL JR. Jabe ``Jake'' A. Caldwell Jr., 83, of San Angelo died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997, in a local hospital. Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at the First Baptist Church Chapel with Dr. Jerold McBride officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Jake was born March 15, 1914, on his grandfather's farm in Freestone County. He was the eldest child of Jabe A. Caldwell and Bertha Lee Caldwell. Jake claims San Angelo as his hometown since his parents moved to San Angelo when he was very young. He attended school in San Angelo including San Angelo Junior College in 1932. After finishing school, Jake went to work for his father who owned the San Angelo Paint and Wallpaper Store. In 1938, he left San Angelo to join the Kuhn Paint Co. of Houston as sales manager of the retail stores. In 1942, Jake joined the U.S. Army Air Corps until March 1946. Jake returned to the Kuhn Paint Co. and in 1950 became vice president and sales manager. In 1960, he joined the Napko Corp. as sales manager of retail stores. In 1969, Jake returned to the Kuhn Paint Co. as vice president and general sales manager, as well as vice president of the Luminal Paint Co. of Los Angeles. In 1972, Jake joined the Kelly-Moore Paint Co. of Houston as sales manager of the Houston district. He then moved to San Angelo because of his wife's health and opened the Kelly-Moore Paint Store. In 1976, Jake established the Angelo Paint Supply Co. from which he retired in 1981. Jake married Grace (Boots) Simmons in 1939, who died in 1975. In 1977, he married Edna Simmons Davidson, who died in 1994. In 1995, he married Anna Bell Wiggins. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Nancy Ostin and one granddaughter, Charri Ostin of High Springs, Fla.; one sister, Cleo Hicks of Austin; two stepsisters, Jean Beesley of San Angelo and Patsy Smith of Houston; seven stepchildren, Ann McGehee of Houston, Bill Davidson of El Paso, James Ward of Brownwood, Carlton Ward of Oklahoma City, Katrena Williams of Odessa, O.C. Ward of De Leon and Howard Ward of San Angelo. Jake was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 570 of San Angelo. Dan was born Feb. 11, 1912, in Navasota, Texas, to Daniel and Maude Kelley Kidd. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Chapman Kidd, and three sisters, Ruth Adams, Elaine Godbold and Martha Kidd. Survivors include two sisters and a brother-in-law, Edith Cutbirth of Bellaire and Helen and Jack Frost of Columbus, Ohio; and a special friend, Nora Boswell of San Angelo. Dan was blessed with many nieces and nephews. Dan attended school in Navasota and was employed by Gulf Oil until World War II began. Dan served with distinction for four years in the U.S. Army in India and Burma. After the war, he moved to San Angelo in 1952 where he was in the hardware business and then employed by Columbia Medical Center until his retirement. Dan was past master of Concho Lodge 1260 and was a member of York Rite Bodies of San Angelo and a member of Suez Shrine Temple. He received the Golden Trowel Award for exceptional service from the Grand Lodge of Texas A.F.&A.M. He was a member of the Baptist church. She traveled extensively as a child, spending time in California, Okinawa and New Jersey and finally settling in Boise in 1976. She graduated from Boise High School in 1982. Janielle was diagnosed with diabetes in 1983 and since then overcame many obstacles related to this illness. Through all of this, she remained optimistic and vowed to lead her life as normally as possible. She was a bright, vivacious, young woman and lived life to the fullest, never one to pass up an opportunity to spend time with family and friends. At the time of her death, she was an employee at the Idaho State Tax Commission. Shortly thereafter, they moved back to Eldorado and Joe Muller, along with his father and sister built West Texas Woolen Mills, which he operated until it was sold in 1963. He was a past member of the Schleicher County School Board and the Southwest Texas Electric Cooperative Board of Directors. He served as a county commissioner for many years and helped with the Concho Valley Boy Scout Council. He was active in the Eldorado Lions Club and was a member of the First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eddy Mae Finley Kinser; his parents, Kate and Frank Kinser; and three brothers, Glendon, Levis and William Lois Kinser. Weatherly moved to Schleicher County with his family in the early 1900s. His family established a farm and ranch 11 miles southwest of Eldorado in the Bailey Ranch community. He attended Bailey Ranch community school and later Eldorado High School. He was interested in farming and ranching and inherited his family farm. He spent his life dedicated to progressive agriculture methods. He was known to have some of the cleanest fields in Schleicher County. He believed in a balance of work and play which he encouraged the youngsters in his family and friend circles to practice. Along with his wife, Eddy Mae, they raised a nephew, James ``Tip'' Finley, who regarded them as his parents. He is survived by Tip Finley and his family, Janee, Lacy, Summer and Ashley Finley; another nephew, George Finley and family; and four nieces, Cathy Kinser Proehl, Toya Bartlett, Jill Henderson and Jean Raygor and their families. Weatherly married Eddy Mae in 1942 before going off to the Pacific as a SeaBee during World War II. During the 1960s, he was a county commissioner during which time the Schleicher County Hospital was built, as well as the county golf course and rodeo arena. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Nadine Zaruba of San Angelo; two sons, Scott and Lynn Zaruba, both of San Angelo; three grandchildren, Benjamin Scott Zaruba, Dillon Jay Zaruba and Zachary Lynn Zaruba; and his mother, Nellie Zaruba of South Bend. _________________________________________________________________ MARY JANE FAILING Mary Jane Failing of San Angelo passed away on Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at her residence. A prayer service will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Johnson's Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will be held at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio. Mrs. Failing was born April 28, 1919, in St. Paul, Minn., to Emma and Charles McDevitt. She enlisted in the Women's Army Air Corps (WACs) twice, first in August 1943 (honorably discharged in December 1945), and then in August 1946. She held the rank of staff sergeant and her decorations and citations included the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two two Bronze Stars and two Over Bars, the WAAC Service medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the European-African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon, the Army of Occupation Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. Mary Jane was married to 1st Lt. Donald R. Failing (Fort Plain, N.Y.), a fighter pilot in the Army Air Corps on Dec. 31, 1946, at the Army-Air Force Base in Straubing, Germany. She was honorably discharged from the WACs in September 1947. Her husband, Donald, was killed in action in February 1950, while flying near Anchorage, Alaska. She was a member of St. Margaret's Catholic Church, past member of the Gray Ladies volunteer organization at Goodfellow Air Force Base, the Artist's Society, the San Angelo Art Club and held for many years the position of head of the Art Department for the San Angelo Rodeo. As a well-known local artist, she donated several of her paintings which were sold for the benefit of the Concho Valley Association for the Blind, and was Artist of the Year in 1991-1992. Mrs. Failing also was active in the San Angelo Saddle Club. She was the first woman inducted into the San Angelo Chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1815 and also is an inscribed member of the newly opened Women in Military Service for American Memorial in Arlington, Va. Mrs. Failing is survived by her son, Gregory A. Failing and his wife, Martha, of San Antonio; and her daughter, Kathleen A. Crespy of San Angelo; three grandchildren, Grant, Ross and Chase Failing of San Antonio; one brother, Charles McDevitt of San Angelo; two nieces, Virginia Shirato of Springfield, Mo., and her family, and Maureen McDevitt of Evergreen, Colo.; and one nephew, Michael McDevitt of Austin. Mary Jane was renowned for her quick and lively wit and also for her extremely generous heart. She was deeply loved by her family and close friends and will be greatly mourned and missed. The family wishes to thank all of Mary Jane's friends for the support and love she received during her battle with cancer. MOFFATT SHREVEPORT, La. - Robert J. Moffatt was born Sept. 9, 1918, in Kansas City, Mo., and grew up in Pecos County and San Antonio, Texas. He had resided in Shreveport since 1947. He died Sunday, Oct. 19, 1997, after a lengthy illness. Mr. Moffatt is survived by his wife, Margaret Fay Smith Moffatt; daughters, Mary Moffatt Clark of Houston and Margaret Moffatt Halliburton of San Antonio; sons, Charles D. Moffatt of Austin and Robert J. Moffatt Jr. of Shreveport; a sister-in-law and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond G. Pipken of San Angelo; and a brother-in-law, Gene Shurley of Sonora. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church.
