The daughter of John D. and Mathilda Kothmann Lehmberg Eckert, Ella was born on Jan. 16, 1900, at her parents' ranch home near Art in Mason County. She took pride in the fact that her father was president of the First State Bank of Mason and later president of the Mason National Bank, as well as a prominent and innovative rancher. Ella attended the Art school and was confirmed in the Art Methodist Church, South. Her later education took place at the San Antonio Female College, now Trinity University. On Dec. 17, 1919, Ella married Frank E. Jordan, and they established their ranch headquarters in the Art community, where they raised prize-winning Hereford cattle. Their sons won numerous championships on both state and national levels with their 4-H Club calves. While her husband helped the boys prepare their calves for their shows, Ella packed clothes and boxes of homemade sausage and cookies; and she joined them on most trips. Having accompanied her husband to these shows and to the numerous shows he judged, Ella became known as an astute judge of cattle in her own right. In 1951, her family was designated Texas Farm Family of the Year at the State Fair of Texas; and in 1972, she was the recipient of the first award ever presented by the Texas Hereford Auxiliary, a gold plaque for her efforts and contributions to the Hereford industry. Ella taught music at their ranch home and served as soloist, pianist and organist on many occasions, frequently church related. Religious life was of major importance to Ella and her family. Her Christian dedication was evident in her service as a leader in church women's organizations. She served four years as president of the Mason WSCS (now UMW) and eight years in district leadership positions. Recently she was honored during the 75th anniversary celebration of the founding of Mount Wesley for her efforts and those of her husband in helping to establish the Mount Wesley Encampment in Kerrville. Ella served as president of the Bluebonnet Study Club. Other memberships included Mason Garden Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Texas Hereford Auxiliary, Mason Historical Society and Art Community Club. Charter memberships were in the Mason County Republican Women's Club and the Evangelical Free Church in Fredericksburg. Ella and Frank celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1969 with a reception at the Mason National Bank. Their 60th anniversary was celebrated in their family home at Art. After 67 years of marriage, Frank passed away on Feb. 28, 1987, at the age of 90. In 1990, Ella and her family celebrated her 90th birthday with a party at which she was joined by approximately 100 relatives. On that occasion, she received recognition from the Texas Senate for her many contributions to life. She also received congratulations from President and Mrs. George Bush. I gave to you my love. You can only guess How much you gave to me in happiness. I thank you for the love you each have shown, But now it's time I traveled on alone. So grieve awhile for me if grieve you must. Then let your grief be comforted by trust. It's only for a while that we must part, So bless the memories within your heart. I won't be far away, for life goes on. So if you need me, call and I will come. Though you can't see or touch me, I'll be near; And if you listen with your heart, you'll hear All my love around you soft and dear. To Those I Love And Those Who Love Me When I am gone, release me, let me go I have so many things to see and do. You mustn't tie yourself to me in tears. Be happy that we had these years. PHILIP EDWARD KORN A long, useful life has come to a close in the death of Philip Edward Korn, 62. He was a man who was there for everyone and a very loving man toward his family. Philip went to be with the Lord Monday, May 26, 1997. Military graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 29, in Belvedere Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Mr. Korn was born Sept. 20, 1934, in Sidney, Ohio. He married Betty Jane Seals Nov. 17, 1961, in Brother Bryan Ross's home in San Angelo. Mr. Korn retired from the U.S. Air Force as a master sergeant after 23 years of service. He dedicated the rest of his life to helping others. He volunteered for Hope Inc., MHMR, Concho Valley Regional Food Bank, Salvation Army, Angelo State University ROTC and as the American Red Cross disaster coordinator of San Angelo up until his illness. Survivors are his very loving and caring wife, Betty Jane Korn; three sons, Christopher Korn and Michael Korn, both of San Angelo, and Lawrence Korn of Fort Worth; two daughters, Diana Fein of Denver, Colo., and Lisa Korn of San Angelo; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was loved very much and will be missed by all who knew him. The family requests that any memorials be made to a favorite charity. Volunteers Many will be shocked to find When the day of judgment nears There's a special place in heaven Set aside for volunteers. Furnished with big recliners, Satin couches and footstools Where there are no committee chairmen No yard sales or rest area coffee to serve No library duties or bulletin assembly. There will be nothing to print or staple, Not one thing to fold and mail, Telephone lists will be outlawed But a finger snap will bring Cool drinks and gourmet dinners And rare treats to fit a king. You ask, ``Who'll serve these privileged few And work for all they're worth?'' Why, all those who reaped the benefits And not once volunteered on Earth.
