Freestone County, Texas Communities Rocky Branch Location: In western Freestone County, east of Big Techuana Creek. Located 1/2 mile north of the old Yeldell community at the intersection of FCR #971 and FCR #973 between Wortham and Kirvin. Used to be a narrow bridge only wide enough for a single lane of cars to cross that washed away in a storm, never to be replaced. Rocky Branch was an Africian-American community begun during the Reconstruction period after the American Civil War. Still existing are an active church and a cemetery. Another church existed at Rocky Branch that practiced with snake handling whose congregation eventually decreased till it was no more. Currently there is a single house of descendants that returned to the original home place.
