Coates' Bottom Community Coates' Bottom was adjacent to Young's Mill (later just called Young) in the northeastern part of the county. African Americans established Coates' Bottom Community after Emancipation. Most migrated from the nearby area around Stewards Mill and Ward Prairie. Coates' Bottom that was predominately African American was adjacent to the predominately Anglo community of Young. Coates' Bottom had Rehovah Baptist Church and Patterson Prairie School, which was later called Young's School.
