The Bryan-College Station Eagle - December 27, 2003 edition Mat Murry Cain, Jr., U.S.N. Commander (Retired) passed away December 24th, 2003 in Temple. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at All Faiths Chapel on the Texas A&M Campus with Robert Tate, LCDR, CHS, U.S.N., (Retired) and Sam Bournias, his nephew from Teague, Texas officiating. Mat was born February 25th, 1918 in Teague to May Lillian and Mat Murry Cain. He married Ruth E. Wilson in Meriden, Connecticut on July 7, 1942. He graduated from Allen Academy in 1935 and was one of the oldest living graduates. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1940, Submarine School in New London, Connecticut in 1942, and Post Graduate School at the Naval Academy in 1946. He served on surface ships and submarines and as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. O-3, the U.S.S. Cushing and the U.S.S. Kermit Roosevelt. He was also Commanding Officer of the Fleet Weather Central, Sangley Point, and Philippines. After retiring from active duty in 1960, he worked at the Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory in Buffalo, New York until 1978 when he joined the Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A&M, retiring in 1986. His family, especially his grandchildren, his home, his dogs and horse as well as woodworking and volunteer activities then became his main interest. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Cain of Bryan; daughters, Claudia Stephens of Chapel Hill, NC and Susan McRee of Houston; grandchildren Marcy Rackley, Jennifer Carter, Matthew, Rachel and Austin McRee and great grandchildren Caitlyn Carter and Lauren Elizabeth Rackley.
