Freestone County, Texas Mayes Cemetery ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Note- USGS GNIS Map Server incorrectly identifies this as "Maze Cemetery".] [NOTE - This cemetery is adjacent to the Lone Star cemetery and often confused with it.] Contributed by: Jimmy Epperson Location: Near Butler Background: When Catherine Mayes died, her husband donated one and half acres of land to the community for use as a cemetery. Some years later, a log church/school building was erected near the site. Directions: If you are going East from Fairfield go about 16 or 17 miles and road is on the left. If you are going West from Palestine on 84, you take FCR 301(Right past Pleasant Hill Children's Home) on right. Take the road around for 1.9 miles. You will come to a Y in the road. Go left to the stop sign. Lone Star Cemetery is on the left and Mayes is right next to it at the bend in the road. Notes: This cemetery is a very old cemetery and there were some stones we couldn’t read all of. There were 7 Metal crosses marking graves. No writing on them. Three markers that we just could not read. There were some field stones in the cemetery that might have been markers for some of the graves, but not sure. Surrounded by a chain link fence. Still in use. Oldest Marked Grave: Aug 24, 1854 [Eric Wood: I have crosschecked this list against the "Freestone County Cemeteries, Vol I" published 1976 which I abbreviated as FCC. This FCC listing mixed the Africian American "LoneStar cemetery" with the Anglo "Mayes cemetery". I included any missing because markers can become unreadable, fall down, or be vandalized. Any added have FCC marked on the line.] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Adams, D.A. Oct 11, 1843-Dec 28, 1897 TX US Army Armstrong, Huldan M.
