Freestone County, Texas Harrison Chapel Cemetery ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Notes by Eric Wood: History of Freestone County, Vol II lists two Harrison Chapel cemeteries with different occupants, yet Dr. Louis lists one cemetery. Both cemeteries in Vol II seem to be Anglo.] Contributed by: Louis Shone, III, MD GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 31.565, Longitude: -96.0997 Status: Inactive Background: Rev. George Washington Harrison gave 10 acres in a deed dated 8 Jan 1856 for Methodist Church, Harrison Chapel, that was later organized with twelve members that quickly grew. Benjamin Blair Black's family was one of five that formed the church in the fall of 1851. The cemetery land was given by Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Ruso Harrison. Many Confederate veterans and early settlers are buried here. The area's post office was Keechi in 1860. In 1870, the church moved to Dew. Harrison Chapel still had a voting precinct in 1878 and the 1893-1894 school year enrollment stood at 27. Directions: Take CR 489 East from Hwy 75 from Dew and go about 4 miles. Turn right on CR 411. Follow the dirt road on back. You will go over about three cattle guards and will be in someone's pasture. This is a very old cemetery and not very well maintained. Oldest Marked Grave: Biddy A. Richards died Aug 29, 1857. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Known Unmarked Graves: Rev. George Washington Harrison, Sr. 15 Dec 1793 - 24 Dec 1857 Elizabeth Willingham Harrison (w/o G. W. Harrison) 1802 - ? I found 2 petrified wood stones as markers, 1 block marker, an Iron Ore Stone with the Intials B.D.B. on it buried between Permintie Elma Holland and William R. Gilpin, a marker broken with the footstone having the intials A.G. There were what appears to be two infant graves covered in Iron ore rocks and then sea shells. An Iron Ore marker with the footstone having the initials E.T.R. A grave covered in Iron Ore rock with Iron Ore Headstone with initials C.F.U. 2 Graves covered in Iron Ore rock with no markings. There appears to be 102 unmarked graves in this cemetery. There were iron ore rocks for the headstone and a smaller one for the footstone. Now I could be wrong on this but they were layed out like a grave and most went in a row with the readable headstones. Mary "Mollie" Black was born in 1858, in Freestone County, Texas, near Lanely and Burleson Hill. She was the daughter of William Anderson "Dick" Black (1834 - 1909) and Margaret Green (1838 - 1913). She married George Washington Berry on September 9, 1875. Mollie died before 1897, when George married Katy Peavy and is buried in an unmarked grave at Harrison Chapel Cemetery, Freestone County, Texas. Acuff, B.W. Died: 5/21/1870 Acuff, E.O.
