El Paso Co. Tx. Obits from the El Paso Times, September 16-23, 2001 Submitted by: Dorris Harrison Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.org/copyright.htm ------------------------------------------------ September 16 2001 Myres, William James (Bill) was born in Sweetwater, Texas on May 8, 1903 and died on August 14, 2001. Bill was a long time resident of Phoenix and was residing at Ridgecrest Health Care facility for the the past four years. He attended Texas A&M University and was proud of being a Texas Aggie. In 1934 Bill left Sweetwater with his wife, Theresa, and their young infant daughter, Billie Jane, to help his father with his business in El Paso, Texas. Together, Bill and his father, Samuel Dale (Tio Sam) Myres, operated the S.D. Myres Saddle Co. which became renowned not only in the Southwest but all over the world for their custom saddles, belts and holsters. In WWI and WWII they made holsters and belts for the US Army and received letters and medals of accommodation for their services to the United States Armed Services. The saddle company made saddles for Will Rogers, Col. J. C. Miller, Capt. John R. Hughes of the Texas Rangers, and many movie stars such as Gene Autry and Tom Mix. Various kinds of quality saddles, some made to order at a cost of thousands of dollars were made at the plant. A large order was once filled for the famous Mexican "bandito" Pancho Villa. Bill was a sharp-shooter and became an expert at fitting a holster to any gun. He was proud to have over 50 patents on his inventions in leather goods. The company also became well known for their mail order business, making police equipment, and Sam Brown equipment for the Border Patrol. Bill was one of the last pioneers in the Southwest leather industry when everything was made by hand. Bill was preceded in death by his wife Theresa in 1970. In the mid-seventies he moved to Phoenix to be close to his daughter. Bill Myres was a hard working man who was proud of his work and proud to put the S.D. Myres stamp on it, he loved a good joke and laughed easily, loved college basketball, the Dallas Cowboys, ballroom dancing with his wife, reminiscing about the "good ole days", chicken fried steak, doing needle point, the Texas Aggies and the state of Texas. Bill is the last of his siblings to pass from this earth and is survived only by his daughter Billie Jane Myres. Bill will be brought to El Paso to be buried next to his wife. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley at 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014. Adios amigo! Vaya con Dios! If you would like to contact the family please wiite to: Billie J.
