Rice Rustler Alvie Ruffin of Alma has recently returned from France where he was with the U.S. forces in the big drive last summer. Alvie had a great experience and one which many have not been able to survive. In one of the big drives by the American forces last July he was wounded five times by a German machine gun and with a leg and arm broken lay for seven days in a shell hole while Germans were fighting all around him. He was wounded when the American soldiers made their advance and when the Germans drove his comrades back he was left behind and for seven days he was without food or water. During that time he says many Germans passed him but none of them took the pains to kill him or give him assistance. The Germans were driven back and he was taken to the hospital by his own comrades. His wounds were received while making a rush on a machine gun nest and after he was down he says he shot a German soldier that was coming on him with a bayonet. Alvie was in the hospital from the time he received his wounds until a few weeks ago when he received his discharge. -- Rice Rustler NOTES: (Grandson of Henry J. and Winnie Virginia Jinks Ruffin) Son of George T. and Lula Fort Ruffin both deceased by WW I Married Nov 14, 1920 Iola Lennon d/o Jame E and Nora E.
