San Angelo Standard-Times, This Week's Obituaries - 08/04/02 to 08/10/02 MARY JO CASTON HARMON Shaffer Funeral Home ROBERT LEE — Mary Jo Harmon, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, went home to join the Lord on July 31, 2002. Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Robert Lee Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Robert Lee Cemetery. Mary Jo was the oldest child of Joseph and Bessie Caston. She was born Sept. 1, 1924, in Miles, Texas. She attended school in Artesia, N.M., at Wildcat in Coke County, and Robert Lee where she graduated at the age of 16. Mary Jo married J.D. Harmon on Feb. 14, 1942, in Ballinger, Texas. While J.D. was overseas during World War II, Mary Jo worked at various jobs here in the states. She began working at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo and then went to work for Consolidated Aircraft in Fort Worth. After attending telegraph operator school, she went to work for Western Union and was assigned to duties in Denver, Washington D.C., and Sacramento, Calif. After the war, J.D. and Mary Jo made their home in Robert Lee. Their daughter, Mandy, was born on Feb. 20, 1955. Mary Jo was an active member and officer of the Robert Lee Garden Club and won many awards for her flower arrangements. The Garden Club also was active in many beautification projects around Robert Lee. Mary Jo’s artistic talents also included painting, which she enjoyed very much. Mary Jo taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and G.A.’s. She took an active role during Mandy’s school years as room mother and PTA officer. J.D. and Mary Jo worked together to build his land and water conservation business. When the business was incorporated, J.D. Harmon Inc. in 1973, Mary Jo served as vice president of the company. Mary Jo was preceded in death by brothers, Henry Caston and Carlton Caston. She is survived by her husband, J.D. Harmon of Robert Lee; her daughter, Mandy Box and husband, Frank Box; grandchildren, Damon Box, Erin Box and Brandon Box; brothers include, Clem Caston, Lowell Caston and J.C. Caston; and sisters, Betty Harp and Evelyn Copple. Mary Jo loved life and was a blessing to everyone who knew her.
