CRANSTON This leading stockman and agriculturist is a son of the occident and beneath its stars he has wroguth out already a mesure of success that is commendable and gratifying to all connected with this eminent sculptor of his own destiny. His parents, Edward P. and Anna (Comnaughty) Cranston, were married in 1860 in Idaho City, being the first couple that entered the matrimonial state in that place. They were natives, respectively, of Ohio and New York. This elder Mr. Cranston struck out into the world for himself when he was twenty-three years of age and from that time to the present he has prosecuted a life of vigorous activity and enterprise. His first venture was in the mercantile world at Walla Walla, Washington, where he continued for one year; he then removed to auburn in this county and operated there and also maintained a branch store in Idaho City, and one at Clarksville, until 1879. At that date he sold his entire mercantile interests and went to Salem and opened the same business which was later sold and he returned to Baker City, where he purchased the stock of goods of a Mr. A. H. Brown, and in connection with this establishment he operated a branch store at Sparta, this state. He finally sold the entire business and bought a ranch of three hundred and thirty acres, where he is at the present time engaged in raising stock and tilling the soil. He handles thoroughbred cattle and sheep, having traded cattle for sheep in 1887. The following children have been born to this worthy couple: Herbert B.; Walter B. died January 5, 1895; Edward T., married to Lena Sturgill; Earl F., married Maggie White; Anna E., wife of W. Moeller; Maude, at home. Returning to the subject of our sketch, Herbert B. Cranston, we note that he was born on Decmeber 21, 1864, and in the various places that have been mentioned where his father did business he received his educational training and learned the ways of business by practical contact with the commercial world and the problems of the day. On March 5, 1889, he was married to Miss Laura Saunders, and to them were born the following children: Herbert C., Florence L., George A. On September 13, 1899, Mrs. Cranston was called from the duties of this life to enter the scenes beyond and left a mourning husband and her three children motherless. At present time Mr. Cranston is living about twenty miles from Baker City in the lower Powder river valley and operating his mammoth estate of six hundred and twenty acres, producing the fruits of the soil and raising stock. He is also discharging the duties of postmaster at the office called Keating, which is done with dispatch and faithfulness and acceptability to all the patrons. His demeanor is fraught with the display of uprightness and candor and genuine principles of truth and probity, which havegained for him the esteem and confidence of all who may have the pleasure of his acquaintance.
