BROWN Andrew J. was born in Sumner county, Tennessee, on January 29, 1824, and at seven years of age he went to Illinois with the family and later to Iowa, in which two states he was educated in the public schools. He continued on his father's farm until he had reached his majority, and in 1850 gathered all together and commenced the weary journey to California with ox teams; and on September 1 of that year he reached Placerville and engaged in mining. Three years later he returned to the states via the Isthmus and farmed thre until 1864, at which date he migrated to Montana and spent two years in getting timber for the mines. In 1867 he came to the Grande Ronde valley and homesteaded a quarter section in the bower Powder country. He continued in the stock business here and in this section until recently he sold his herds on account of the desire to retire from active enterprise and spend the golden years of a well spent life in more seclusion, enjoying the fruits of his labor. He owns three lots and a comfortable home in Baker City, besides other property. Mr. Brown was married in Iowa on November 23, 1847, to Miss Martha A. Harp, a native of Illinois. To them have been born thirteen children: George W.; Mary Ellen; Pleasant J.; Hannah Rebecca; Rosella Alice; ADa Ann; Elosia, deceased; Andrew Jackson, deceased; Martha J.; Cornelia; Almina; Cora May, and one infant not named. On February 20, 1874, Mrs. Brown was called to lay down the burdens of this life and take her place in the scenes beyond. Mr. Brown is well advanced in years, but is enjoying good health and is the recipient of the good wishes and esteem of his wide circle of acquaintances, and his years are being passed in quiet enjoyment of the portion his toil justly accumulated.
