Betty was born in Chickasa, Okla., and raised in Portland, where she attended Madison High School and Portland Community College. She always loved the beach and lived near it all of her life, most of the time in Oregon with sometime in California and Hawaii. At the beach she found peace and inspiration. She loved working with her hands and created pottery, needlework, crocheting and sewing. Betty was a reliable and hard working employee working as a freight rate clerk for several freight shipping companies. She loved animals and always had at least one as a companion. The miracle Betty had always hoped for came to pass in the last years of her life. She had maintained her maiden name hoping the child of her youth would find her someday. In 2004 a wonderful man knocked at her door. That visit brought much happiness to her as her son, Barry, came into her life along with her family. Betty passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family and loved ones. Her mother Ruth Sloan Jarrell preceded her in death. She is survived by her father, O.B. Jarrell of Portland; sister Donna and Larry Deaton of Milwaukie; sister Margarette and Bryan Campbell of Ogden, Utah; son, Barry and Chrissy Steinbock of Pheonix, Ariz.; grandchildren, Hayden and Lily Steinbock also of Pheonix; and her longtime companion, Richard Laing of Portland. Betty asked that remembrance donations be directed to the Meals on Wheels of the Loaves and Fishes Center, PO Box 19477, Portland OR 97280-0477; www.loavesandfishesonline.org; 503-771-3601. Their loving and faithful service was greatly appreciated. There will be a memorial gathering from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 10 in Betty's home.
