The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. ==================================================================== The Chickasha Express-Star 23 September 2002 JOE GORDON HUMPHREY Funeral service for Joe Gordon Humphrey, 68, of Amarillo, Texas, former Chickasha resident, will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 24, 2002, at the Sharon Baptist Church. Joe Gordon Humphrey died suddenly Saturday, September 21, 2002, at his home in Amarillo, Texas. Mr. Humphrey was born November 2, 1933, east of Chickasha, to Holland G. and Mildred (Taylor) Humphrey. He farmed and lived east of Chickasha all of his life, until moving to Amarillo, Texas, on May 1, 2002. He married Linda Ann Lair on May 8, 1954, in Chickasha, Oklahoma. Mr. Humphrey attended Friend School, graduating in the Class of 1951. He served two years in the U.S. Army, then returned to farming, including farming the land upon which he was born. He served on the Friend School Board for seven years, served as president of the Grady County Alfalfa Grower's Association and was a founding member of the University of Oklahoma Beef Club. He was an avid fan of OU sports, having been a long time season ticket holder of the football program. He also had held season women's basketball programs. He was his happiest attending any of the OU sporting events. He also attended the Oklahoma State high school basketball tournaments all of his life. He was a lifelong member of the Sharon Baptist Church (which was a church founded by his paternal grandmother) where, over the past 50 years, he had served as Trustee, Sunday School Director, Training Union Director, and a member of the choir. He had taught Sunday School classes for many years for the Young Married Group, and, most recently, for the Adult Men's class. He was currently a member of Paramount Baptist Church in Amarillo. He was currently working for Craig Methodist Retirement Center in Amarillo. He is survived by: his high school sweetheart and wife of 48 years: Linda Lair Humphrey of Amarillo, Texas; 1 daughter: Jacqueline Humphrey and her husband, Rob Chafin, and their ten-year-old daughter, Jacqueline Humphrey Chafin, all of Amarillo, Texas; 2 sons: Joe Humphrey, Jr.,, his wife, Susan, and three-year-old son, Cale Gannon of Frisco, Texas, Holland Humphrey and his wife, Rebecca and their six-year-old son, Andrew Peterson, all of Mobile, Alabama; 4 sisters: Florence Dunn, Melba Kell, Sarah Kell and Carolyn Albright, all of whom live east of Chickasha; 1 uncle: Jack Taylor of Coarse Gold, California; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by: his father in 1968, his mother in 1971, his brother, Kenneth Humphrey, in 1972, and his brother, Marshall Humphrey, in 1974. Mr. Humphrey was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is much loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He had a kind and generous heart. Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home. The family requests that his life be immortalized by contributions to the University of Oklahoma Women's Basketball Program, OU Athletic Development, 180 W. Brooks, Norman, OK 73019.
