MORSE (PHOTO) ALVA ---- The funeral for Afton Pearl Morse, 79, will be 10 a.m. Monday at Wharton Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Greg Hook will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasantview Cemetery at Dacoma. She was born April 6, 1922, in Alva to Rhonda Alberta Campbell and Thomas Creighton “Crate” Heaton and died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, in Woodward. She attended grade school in Alva, Freedom and Farry. She graduated from Farry High School in 1940. On Oct. 20, 1940, she married James Nusser. She attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University for three years and worked as a bookkeeper for Alva Recap and Conoco service station. In 1970, she married Merlin Morse. They lived near Pond Creek. He died in 1987, and she moved to Woodward. She was a member of Woodward First Baptist Church, Rebekah Lodge and VFW Auxiliary. Surviving are two daughters, Alberta Carver and Betty Parks, both of Woodward; one son, Jerry Nusser of Alva; three stepsons, Dick Morse of Enid, Farrell Morse of Pond Creek and Lonnie Morse of Portland, Ore.; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Woodward First Baptist Church. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BOB PARK (PHOTO) A memorial service for Bob Park, 72, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Henninger- Allen Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Bill Masters will officiate. A private burial will take place at a later date. He was born Oct. 6, 1929, in Thomas to Louis and Maude Kopp Park and died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, in St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz. At an early age, he moved to Enid with his parents. He graduated from Enid High School in 1947. On July 18, 1975, he married Berniece Kehr. They lived in Enid where he worked for Allstate Insurance for 39 years. Surviving are his wife, Berniece of the home; four children, Brad of Dennison, Texas, Janet Bohn of Chickasha, Charlotte Lindsey of Keller, Texas, and Susan Gilbert of Springfield, Mo.; two sisters, Betty Davis of Enid and LaVena Nuzman of Kansas City, Mo.; and eight grandchildren. NILES OKLAHOMA CITY ---The funeral for Carol Jean Niles, 66, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Assembly of God at Crescent. Mark LeMatt, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland-Knowles Cemetery. Arrangements are by Abernathy Funeral Home, Crescent. She was born Jan. 23, 1936, in New Orleans, La., to George and Thelma St. Alexandre Miller and died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, in Oklahoma City. On Dec. 15, 1965, she married Derrold Niles at Edenburg, Texas. She was a member of Crescent Take Down Club and involved in various school activities. Surviving are her husband, Derrold of the home; two sons, Scott Schulz of Crescent and Mark Niles of Oklahoma City; one daughter, Michelle Tarrant of Wichita, Kan.; one stepdaughter, Sherri Niles of Oklahoma City; one stepson, Mike Niles of Mustang; two brothers, George Miller of Pineville, La., and James Miller of Mandeville, La.; and 14 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her stepfather, Dewey Porter. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JOHN W. CLOW ENID --- The funeral for John William Clow, 59, will be 2 p.m. Monday in First Baptist church of Lahoma. Steve Campbell, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery near Aline. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home, Helena. The casket will be open at the funeral home from 1 to 8 p.m. today and at the church Monday. He was born March 16, 1942, to Loren and Virginia Major Clow and died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002. He graduated from Ringwood High School, then attended auctioneer school in Illinois and real estate classes. He became an auctioneer and real estate broker. He had lived in Fairview, then moved to Enid in 1986. He worked for Home Health Care REM Oklahoma. On Feb. 19, 1988, he married Erlene Francisco. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lahoma. Surviving are his wife, Erlene of Enid; two children, Justin of Fairview and Kelly Greenwood of Little Rock, Ark.; two stepchildren, Larry Halcomb and Joseph Clayton, both of Enid; two sisters, Konda Clow of Enid and Loretta Campbell of Ringwood; one brother, Larry Muzingo of Crescent; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. ROGERS MOORELAND--- A graveside service for Cecil Doyle Rogers, 73, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Mooreland Cemetery. Arrangements are by Billings Funeral Home. He was born Oct. 9, 1928, in Buffalo to Charles and Hazel Cash Rogers and died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, Enid. He attended schools at Buffalo. His mother signed for him to go into the Navy at age 17. He served during World War II from 1945 to 1947, then entered the Army, serving in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1953. He continued to serve in the Army National Guard until July 1984. He earned numerous decorations and citations. On May 2, 1957, he married Lona Haller at Clayton, N.M. They lived on the Selman Ranch, where he was a foreman and she was a cook. In the early 1960’s they moved to Woodward. He worked for Broce Construction building bridges. They later moved to Norman, and he worked for Ramada Inn as a maintenance supervisor. The corporation sent him to the Virgin Islands in mid-1970’s to Water Island, where he taught natives how to take care of maintenance of the hotels. The family moved to Mooreland i8n 1980. He worked for Bill Williams as a truck driver. He later drove a truck driver. He later drove a truck for Dart Transit until the late 1990’s. Surviving are his wife, Lona of the home; two sons, Rick of Fallbrook, Calif., and Steven of Woodward; one daughter, Nona Ruth of Arvada, Colo.; one brother, Eldon “Bud” of Mesa, Ariz.; two sisters, Muriel Guthrie of Woodward and Madge Matthews of California; 11 grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OPAL GRACE ROBERTSON GRAY FAIRVIEW ---The funeral for Opal Grace Robertson Gray will be 10 a.m. Monday at Central Christian Church. Smith, 74, will be 1:30 p.m. Monday in Elm Grove Church. Orville White will officiate. Burial will be in Orion Cemetery. Arrangements are by Redinger Funeral Home, Seiling. The casket will be open at the church before the service. She was born Feb. 6, 1928, in Chester to Earnest Claude and Mary Barbara Hurt Paris and died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at Fairview Fellowship Home. She attended elementary school at Chester, then moved to Alva to stay with her older sister, Vada. She graduated from Alva High School in 1946. She married John Glen Smith on Aug. 2, 1947, in Alva. They lived in Chester, where they owned and operated John Smith Mobil service station for 19 years. In the early 1970’s, she began work for Farm Bureau in Fairview, retiring in 2001. Surviving are her husband, John; one son, Ron of Chickasha; two daughters, Jeanette Engle of Minco and Barbara Walton of Fairview; two brothers, Alvin Paris of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Sammy Paris of Idaho; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers. Crawford, 51, will be 10:00 a.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery, Enid. A memorial service will be 4:00 p.m. Monday in Kerr Chapel First Presbyterian Church, Tulsa. (Butch) Crawford Jr. was born in Lindsay, OK, May 15, 1950, and went to be wit h the Lord, his best friend and Savior, Thursday, February 14, 2002. He grew up in Enid, OK, and graduated from Enid High School. He married Adrienne Elder July 15, 2000, and the happy couple lived in Tulsa, OK. Syl loved to spend lots of time with his beloved family. He was a sales representative for T&W Tire. Syl was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and loved to attend horse races. He was the founder and promoter of Equine Athletics. He is survived by Adrienne, his wife; two step-daughters Paige and Taylor of the home; son and daughter-in-law Tony and Lori Crawford of Moore, OK; son Levi Crawford of Moore, OK; three beloved granddaughters, Jessica, Shaylee, and Darien Crawford, all of Moore, OK; parents Syl and Dorlaine Crawford of Enid; brother Alan Crawford and wife Julie of Enid; brother Bruce Crawford of Arlington, TX; sister Susan Crawford of Enid; two nephews Jeremy and Dylon; one niece Savanna; his grandmother Dawn Burch of Wynnewood, OK; uncles Earl, John, Jim, Robert, Richard and John Burch; aunts Violet and Joyce Crawford. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MYRTLE SHOLD Myrtle Shold passed away in San Antonio, Texas on January 29, 2002. She was born on the family homestead at Waukomis, Nov. 8, 1911, to Fred and Fannie Anderson. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband R.C. Shold; three brothers; a sister; two sons Robert and Melvin Thorp and a daughter Ethel Thorp Landon. She leaves to mourn two daughters, Myrna Havas of San Antonio, TX, Marilyn Hair of Jamestown, S.C.; and a son Warren Thorp of Enid; 16 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. She was affectionately known as ‘fishy Grandma’ and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. A memorial service was held at Esplanade Gardens in Converse, TX, February 2, 2002. Donations in Mrs. Shold’s name may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Arrangements are by Puente and Sons Funeral Chapel, San Antonio, Texas. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CHARLES PARKER (PHOTO) RINGWOOD --- Charles “Choppy” Parker was born February 2, 1936 at Combs, Arkansas to Raymond Jack Parker and Marie Martin. He left this life on February 14, 2002, finding peace after a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his parents. During his full life he was privileged with five children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He attended and graduated from Comanche High School at Comanche, Oklahoma. During high school he excelled in football and boxing. His boxing team was credited with successfully defeating the Fort Sill Army Team when he delivered the victory with the only knockout of the event. The defeat resulted in Fort Sill dropping all competitive matches with high schools. After graduation he entered the US Army where he obtained the rank of Sergeant while stationed in Wildflecken, Germany. Through his training Choppy achieved citations as a 1000 meter expert on the M-1 Garand and the 45 pistol. Choppy resided the majority of his adult life in the Ringwood area. He retired from Continental Trend Resources after being one of the company’s original employees. During his tenure he worked as a truck driver, driller and tool pusher. Even after his retirement, you could find him having his morning coffee at the Ringwood shop When not hanging around the shop, he could be found at Salt Plains Lake pursuing the ever elusive channel cat with whoever would go with him. Fish quivered at the sheer mention of his name. Choppy had such a fondness for the sport of fishing and Salt Plains Lake his family has decided to hold one last fishing trip for him and his friends at Salt Plains Memorial services will be held at Wildwood Outdoor Chapel located at the river Road area campgrounds behind the dam of the Great Salt Plains Lake on Wednesday, February 20, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home, Helena. Choppy’s passion for the sport of fishing and the appreciation he had for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, the family asks that in lieu of flowers those who choose may make a memorial donation to the Wildlife Department’s Education Program Project. Velma was born Sept. 25, 1905, at Pond Creek, Okla., the daughter of Frank and Hattie Duncan Hughes. She died at Golden Oaks Nursing Home, Enid on Feb. 15, 2002. She grew up on a farm northwest of Pond Creek. She attended school in Pond Creek and graduated in 1923. She married Walter Skaggs on Nov. 16, 1926. They made their home on a farm in the Nash area. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Nash and Home Maker Study Club. Survivors are one son, Don Skaggs and his wife, Bonnie, Nash; two brothers, Breyon Hughes, Merigold, Miss., and Frank Hughes, Lawton; two grandsons, Troy Skaggs and wife, Rhonda, Nash; Alan Skaggs, Ava, Mo.; one great- granddaughter, Shelby Skaggs, Nash. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter in 1979; two brothers and three sisters. Memorials may be made to Nash Baptist Church or Nash Fire Department. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRUMAN HERBERT “HERB” NETHERTON (PHOTO) A funeral service for Truman Herbert “Herb” Netherton, age 95, will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 18, 2002, at the Anderson-Burris Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Floyd Churn and Chaplain Shorty Unruh officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with arrangements by Anderson-Burris Funeral Home. He was born on October 18, `906, to Truman Gabriel and Willa May (Stout) Netherton in Woodward, Oklahoma Territory, and died on Thursday, February 14, 2002, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Enid. He grew up in Alva and Oklahoma City, and attended the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma Baptist University. On July 1, 1 927, he married Rebecca Mae McCuan. He started to wo5rk for OG&E on April 21, 1930, in Oklahoma City; then moved to Enid in 1937, retiring here in 1971 after 40 years of service. After the death of his wife in February, 1971, he married Pearl Virginia Bruce on March 18, 1972. He was a member of First Baptist Church, the Enid Amateur Radio Club, and the Enid Senior Center. He was well known as a square dance caller for many years throughout Oklahoma and Kansas, and was the host and caller for the popular Saturday Night Square Dance on KGEO in the mid 1950’s. For the last ten years he sang with the RSVP Band which plays at nursing homes in the area and at the Senior Center. Surviving him are his wife, Pearl of Golden Oaks Village; his son Truman William Netherton of Burlington, Massachusetts; his daughter Janet Kay Churn of Princeton Junction, New Jersey; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was the oldest of four sons. His three brothers, Harold, Edwin, and Robert preceded him in death. He was born Oct. 5, 1937, near Waurika to Birt Lucille Robbins Clayton and Alfred Blake “Pete” Clayton Sr. and died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, in Enid. He graduated from Irving Schools in 1955. He attended Cameron College one year. On Nov. 24, 1956, he married Irene High in Cameron. He worked on the assembly line for General Motors in Arlington, Texas. The couple lived in Fort Worth. The GM plant closed in March 1957, and he accepted a job with Signature Loan in Dallas. In 1962, he became employed with Term Plan Finance and was in charge of a large collection department. He was promoted to manager in 1965 and moved to Oklahoma City to manage the Capitol Hill branch. In 1969, he began in sales for Evans Home Furnishing. In 1973, he became employed as branch manager for Credit Thrift and was transferred to the Enid office in 1975. Credit Thrift became American General Finance in 19889. He retired as branch manager Feb. 28, 2001. Clayton was a Dale Carnegie graduate and taught classes as a graduate assistant for four years. He served on many committees for Enid Kiwanis Club and was president from 1995 to 1996. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and served as an usher. Surviving are his wife, Irene and grandson, Ryan, of the home; one son, John of Enid; two daughters, Cindy Burnham of Virginia Beach, Va., and Peggy Rose of Fremont, Calif.; three sisters, Bertha Coleman of Henrietta, Texas, and Dorothy Mitchell and Marie Bonham, both of Wichita Falls, Texas; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. VERTREESE AMARILLO, Texas – The funeral for Dorothy Jane Vertreese, 87, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Home. Local arrangements were by Brown-Cummings Funeral Home of Enid. She was born Feb. 2, 1915, in Saint Joseph, Mo., to Romeo and Mary Ellen Sweet and died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Methodist Home of Enid. She moved with family to Wildorado in 1917. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1933 and from St. Anthony’s Hospital Nursing School in 1938. She was a head nurse at St. Anthony’s Hospital for 30 years. On April 17, 1942, she married John O. Vertreese. She was a life-long member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a member of St. Cecelia’s Altar Society. Surviving are three daughters, Joanne Sweet Naples, Honey Jane Washburn of Enid and Mary Jeanne “Jeanne” Ayala; one son, John; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jan. 1, 1994, and two brothers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LUCILLE CRAWFORD The funeral for Lucille Crawford, 87, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Ladusau- Evans Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Lester Lowry will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. She was born Oct. 4, 1914, in Moline, Ill., to Roy M. and Jessie Augusta Simmons Metz and died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at Integris Bass Baptist Health Center. On May 3, 1931, she married James C. Crawford in Moline, Ill. They moved to Kaw City, then to Enid in 1965. She was a housekeeper at Ramada Inn, retiring in 1976. She was a member of Evangel Assembly of God. Surviving are five daughters, Verla Forshee, Sharon Rowland, Faith Anderson, Monna Younger and Helen Hyde, all of Enid; one son, James of Enid; one sister, Helen Whitesell of Enid; 22 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1976, one grandson, one great- grandson and one great-granddaughter. On Jan. 6, 1934, she married William S. “Bill” Palmer at May. She was a homemaker and lived in Ringwood all her married life. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Surviving are two sons, Gary of Heavner and Frank of Ringwood; one sister, Fern Rutledge of Stillwater; and a number of grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993 and one brother. Arrangements are by Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. He was born Sept. 20, 1926, in Enid to W. Arthur and Annabell Cottrell Schwedland and died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at his home. He graduated from Enid High School in 1944, then enlisted into the Navy. He served during World War II and was discharged in 1946. He attended the University of Oklahoma and a college in Louisiana for a short time. He was drafted into the Army, serving in Korea. In February 1953, he began working for Hackney Iron and Steel. He retired in 1993 as plant manager. On Oct. 9, 1955, he married Benalea “Benny” Baker in Enid. He was born Sept. 6, 1917, in Texhoma to Harland and Lena Burns and died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Presbyterian Hospital in Oklahoma City. At an early age he moved to the Geary area and graduated from Greenfield High School in 1935. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps and helped build facilities in Roman Nose State Park. He served four years with the Army during World War II and obtained the rank of tech sergeant. He was stationed in Hawaii, the Philippines and Japan. After the war, he worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Soil Conservation Service in Guymon, Medford and Enid. On Nov. 25, 1961, he married Joenita Dolan in Enid. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. He retired in Enid in 1984 after 41 years of federal service. Due to failing health, he recently had moved to Oklahoma City. Surviving are two sons, Mark of Enid and Paul of Oklahoma City; four sister, Alice Dunlap and Winifred Jones, both of El Reno, Norma Kruta of Yukon and Imojean Johnson of Pinehurst, N.C.; and three brothers, Dan and Joe of Bethany and Eugene of Davis. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DELBERT E. He grew up on a farm southwest of Okeene and graduated from a consolidated school in the Homestead area. He attended Union College in Lincoln, Neb., and received a degree in math and science from Northwestern Oklahoma State University. He did post-graduate work at Oklahoma State University and the University of New Mexico. He taught school for seven years in several area schools and in New Mexico. He also was a coach. In 1940, he enlisted into the Army Air Corps. He studied meteorology. After an honorable discharge, he worked for the U.S. Weather Bureau in Kansas City as a li8aison officer for two years. He then was assigned to head the new weather bureau office in Colorado Springs, retiring in 1973 after 28 years of service. In 1974, he moved to Watonga. On April 20, 1947, he married Maxine Knoles at Kansas City, Mo. Surviving are his wife, Maxine of the home; one son, Sam of Harrah; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister. He served in the Canadian Air Force in England. At the start of World War II, he opted to serve his country in the U.S. Army. He married Sonya Bruner on March 10, 1945. He lived in Cleveland, Ohio, West Virginia, then moved to Fort Worth, Texas. He moved to Enid in 1960 where he owned and operated Al Reed’s Service Station Equipment Repair for thirty years. He is survived by his wife, Sonya of the home; two daughters, Sandy Snodgrass of Kingfisher, and Robin Harms of Hennessey. A son, Jim “Buddy” Reed of Enid. He attended the University of Oklahoma and also attended college for a short time in Louisiana. Then Wayne was drafted into the United States Army serving in Korea. In February of 1953, Wayne became employed with Hackney Iron and Steel. After a long career with the company, he retired in 1993 as the plant manager. On October 9, 1955, he married Benalea (Benny) Baker in Enid. She preceded him in death on November 8, 1987. (PHOTO) Alfred Blake Clayton, Jr. was born October 5, 1937 to Birt Lucille (Robbins) Clayton and Alfred (Pete) Blake Clayton, Sr. on a farm near Waurika, Oklahoma and passed away Sunday, February 17, 2002 at the age of 64 in Enid, Oklahoma. Al graduated in 1955 from Irving schools. He was captain of the baseball and basketball team, was a member of the speech and drama team winning many trophies for the school, and was president of his senior class. Al attended Cameron College from 1955 to 1956 and was on the boxing team. Al met Irene High at Cameron and was married November 24, 1956. In 1956, Al worked on the assembly line for General Motors in Arlington, Texas. Al and Irene lived in Fort Worth. The GM plant closed for the season in March 1957, Al then accepted a job with Signature Loan in Dallas. In 1962 he became employed with Term Plan Finance and was in charge of a large collection department. He was promoted to manager in 1965 and moved to Oklahoma City to manage the Capitol Hill branch. In 1969, he began working in sales for Evans Home Furnishing until 1973, when he became employed as branch manager for Credit Thrift and was transferred to the Enid office in 1975. Credit Thrift became American General Finance in 1989 and moved to the present location. The branch under Al’s leadership, won many awards and he remained branch manager until February 28, 2001, when he retired. Al was a Dale Carnegie graduate and taught classes as a graduate assistant for four years. He also served on many committees for the Enid Kiwanis Club, and was president from 1995 to 1996. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and served as an usher. Al enjoyed camping with his family and friends. Al and Irene were married 45 years. His parents preceded Al in death. He is survived by his wife Irene and grandson Ryan Clayton of the home in Enid, Oklahoma; one son, John Clay ton of Enid, Oklahoma; two daughters, Cindy Burnham and husband Chief Petty Officers Kelly of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Peggy Rose and husband Danny of Freemont, California; three sisters Bertha Coleman of Henrietta, Texas, Dorothy Mitchell of Wichita Falls, Texas, Marie Bonham of Wichita Falls, Texas, eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren, as well as numerous to her relatives and friends. Elsie Ann Warkentin, age 83, passed away on Sunday, February 17, 2002, at Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City following a brief illness. One of eight children, Ann was born to Floyd and Nellie Doughty on April 15, 1918, in the community of Homestead where she spent her childhood. Upon graduation she moved to Stillwater to attend Oklahoma A&M College where she took a degree in Business Education. Ann became the bride of L.D. Warkentin in 1941. They were married for 56 years until his death in 1997. As a mother of three, Ann devoted much of her life to homemaking and sewing for her children. She maintained a lifelong interest in music, frequently participating in the church choir and playing the piano for her own enjoyment and that of her family. The Warkentin family lived in the Oklahoma communities of Arnett, El Reno, Cheyenne, and Enid, and spent two years in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Ann returned to the working world in 1966 with the Department of Human Services and later for the Sunnyside Center in Enid. Upon retirement Ann devoted much of her time to the art of quilting and won numerous awards at state and national quilt shows. She is survived by one brother, Dennis Doughty, of Trinity, Texas; a son, Patrick M. Warkentin, of Sandpoint, Idaho; two daughters, Colette K. Warkentin of Oklahoma City, OK and Robyn Warkentin Burns of Ramstein, Germany; three granddaughters, two grandsons and two great grandchildren. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OSCAR HUGH (HOOT) GIBSON (PHOTO) Oscar Hugh (Hoot) Gibson died February 17 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 78 years old. He was born December 1, 1923 in Guymon, Oklahoma, the firstborn of Fred and Ruby Gibson. He graduated from Nash High School. His natural love of machinery contributed to his lifelong occupation. He became a diesel mechanic at a very young age. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps during World War II while with the 4th Marine Division in the Marrianas Islands. After the war he returned to Oklahoma. Oscar then met Lou Carter and they were married on December 24, 1946 in Enid. Together they raised seven children, all or whom graduated from Medford Public Schools. He lived and worked in Medford and Enid until two years ago at the onset of his bout with cancer. After Lou’s death in 1981, he married Lois Boetta of Enid in December of 1982. Lois died in May 2000. He could be described by his love of family and passion for his hobbies including the restoration and preservation of the railroad systems of our past. He drove the Kiwanis train at Meadowlake Park and enjoyed taking train trips himself. He was predeceased by Lou, Lois, his parents, one brother, one sister, and one grandson. He is survived by four sons, three daughters, and their spouses; Freddie and Janice Gibson, Tulsa, Dean and Ina Gibson, Owasso, Martie and Lyle Young, Enid, Connie and Mike Dean, Ft. Gibson, Mark and Leah Gibson, Allen, TX, Beth and Bob Bonner, Pretty Prairie, KS and Don and Marla Gibson, Wichita, KS, sixteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, one brother, J.W. On Sept. 9, 1931, she married Asa Marvin Hines at Arnett. They lived on a farm northeast of Woodward for 36 years. The couple sold their farm and moved into Woodward July 29, 1967. She was employed by Armour Co. for 12 years and worked at various other jobs in Woodward. She was a member of Pleasant Valley Pentecostal Church. Surviving are one brother, Dillon Kline of Oklahoma City; and one sister, Iona Hines of Grand Junction, Colo. The family moved to Wenatchee, Wash., where she worked in a cannery. She was about 14 when the family returned to the Alva area, and she worked in a cook shack during harvest. On July 18, 1933, she married Ervin Chester Culver at Medicine Lodge, Kan. They lived west of Alva before moving into Alva. She did laundry for other people and was a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Surviving are three daughters, Marian Sunderland of Fairbanks, Alaska, Wilma Ridgway of Perry and LaKeata James of Alva; four sons, Jerrold of Fairbanks, Norman of Kingfisher, Gene of Guymon and Kim of Kingfisher; 19 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and 9 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 2, 1982, 14 sisters and brothers, one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter. He married Mary Mills. He was inducted into the Army on Jan. 23, 1952, and served in the Korean War. He was injured in battle and received numerous commendations. He was discharged Jan. 12, 1954. He married Bonnie Jean Bishop on Dec. 25, 1955, at Woodward. He began work for Woodward Fire Department on Feb. 1, 1955, and retired as assistant chief in June 1976. He then worked for Joe Maddox Insulation. He also was an instructor with Oklahoma State University Fire Service Training. (PHOTO) Alfred Blake Clayton, Jr. was born October 5, 1937 to Birt Lucille (Robbins) Clayton and Alfred (Pete) Blake Clayton Sr. on a farm near Waurika, Oklahoma and passed away Sunday, February 17, 2002 at the age of 64 in Enid, Oklahoma. Al graduated in 1955 from Irving schools. He was captain of the baseball and basketball team, was a member of the speech and drama team winning many trophies for the school and was president of his senior class. Al attended Cameron College from 1955 to 1956 and was on the boxing team. Al met Irene High at Cameron and was married November 24, 1956. In 1956, Al worked on the assembly line for General Motors in Arlington, Texas. Al and Irene lived in Fort Worth. The GM plant closed for the season in March 1957. Al then accepted a job with Signature Loan in Dallas. In 1962 he became employed with Term Plan Finance and was in charge of a large collection department. He was promoted to manager in 1965 and moved to Oklahoma City to manage the Capitol Hill branch. In 1969, he began working in sales for Evans Home Furnishing until 1973, when he became employed as branch manager for Credit Thrift and was transferred to Enid office in 1975. Credit Thrift became American General Finance in 1989 and moved to the present location. The branch under Al’s leadership, won many awards and he remained branch manager until February 28, 2001 when he retired. Al was a Dale Carnegie graduate and taught classes as a graduate assistant for four years. He also served on many committees for the Enid Kiwanis Club, and was president from 1995 to 1 996. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and served as an usher. Al enjoyed camping with his family and friends. Al and Irene were married for 45 years. His parents preceded Al in death. He is survived by his wife Irene and grandson Ryan Clayton of the home in Enid, Oklahoma; two daughters, Cindy Burnham and husband Chief Petty Officer Kelly of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Peggy Rose and husband Danny of Freemont, California; three sisters Bertha Coleman of Henrietta, Texas, Dorothy Mitchell of Wichita Falls, Texas, Marie Bonham of Wichita Falls, Texas, eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren, as well as numerous other relatives and friends. When the home closed in 2001, he moved to Beadles Nursing Home in Alva. Dorothy Mary Thomas Cozart was born on June 8, 1921 in Manchester, Oklahoma, the daughter of DeWitt and Daisy Newcomb Thomas, and died peacefully on Saturday, February 16, 2002 at her residence. Dorothy graduated from Medford High School and continued her lifelong pursuit of learning at Phillips University, where she began teaching, but fate introduced another of Dorothy’s life long loves, Hugh Cozart. Dorothy and Hugh were married on June 3, 1943 in Boise, Idaho where Hugh was posted before he shipped out to serve in World War II. After the war, Dorothy and Hugh settled in the long life of love and work on their farm outside of Waukomis, Oklahoma. Dorothy then returned to education by attending Oklahoma State University where she received her masters in English. Dorothy then began a long teaching career first in Kansas, then at Phillips University. Dorothy invested much of herself in her students, and she has been loved and respected as an educator by all who knew her. Throughout her life, Dorothy researched and lectured on many topics including Oklahoma history. Dorothy was very involved with the Cherokee Strip Museum and she felt proud of her heritage as an Oklahoman. Even after her retirement from full time teaching, Dorothy continued to learn and teach. Dorothy began teaching English as a second language to several students and continued in this until her death. All her students have become her advisors and more importantly her friends. Dorothy also dedicated her time to her love of quilts. She became a quilt historian and wrote articles, lectured and just enjoyed all the amazing stories and facts she learned about quilts and the women who made them. She was a founding member of the American Quilt Study Group. In addition, Dorothy explored her love of flowers, trees, shrubs, grasses and all growing things through all types of gardening. It was this love that led Dorothy to become a master gardener. In that capacity, she not only continued to learn more about plants and push her gardening skills farther, but she also helped others with any gardening needs through lectures and one on one help. Dorothy was a wonderful person who gave her all to everything she did and everyone she knew. Her family never doubted she loved and respected each one of them. Dorothy was preceded in death by her loving husband, Hugh. Dorothy (“Granny”) is survived by her adoring family, her daughter and son-in- law, Marcia and Hal Greenwood; hr son and daughter-in-law, Wayne Cozart and Pat Lampkin, By her grandchildren, Linette, Owen, Aianna and Cade, Dylan, Colleen and Hayes. By her two great-grandchildren, Hugh and Gage. And by Richard Hernendez. All love and miss her dearly. Ted was born December 29, 1909 at Grand Valley in Beaver County, Oklahoma the sixth child of Thaddeus and Christine Thompson Cowan. He was raised on a farm in Beaver County and graduated from Beaver High School. He served in the Navy on the USS McKasser Strait during WWII, in the South Pacific and was an aviation boatswain’s mate 1st class. He got an honorable discharge November 6, 1945 in San Diego, California. He was a heavy equipment operator and for many years operated a service station in Ashfork, Arizona. Later he made his home in Phoenix. Although Ted did not marry, he rejoiced in family visits, Ted came to the aid of his widowed sisters when needed and befriended a disabled nephew for 20 years. Also enjoyed all of his nieces and nephews. Ted loved to play games. Bridge was his favorite. He traveled throughout the United States playing in bridge tournaments and was very proud of being a Life Master. The last few years he had lived in Enid, first with his sister, Pauline, and then at Greenbrier Residential Living. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and several bridge clubs. Survivors are one brother, Calvin Cowan, Grand Junction, Colorado; two sisters, Esther Winchester, Derby, Kansas and Pauline Ohmart, Enid; several nieces and nephews including Mrs. John Clausing, Enid. Surviving are one daughter, Kay Allen of Columbus, Ohio; and one son, Bob of Boulder, Colo. She was preceded in death by her husband, three sisters and three brothers. On July 26, 1941, she married Ray Cordry. She taught school for four years in area rural schools followed by 26 years at Hennessey Public Schools. She was a past recipient of the Teacher of the Year award, and was a member of First Christian Church where she sang in the choir. Surviving are her husband, Ray of the home; one son, Dr. Ray Cordry Jr. of Hennessey; one daughter, Ann Lavicky of Enid; two sisters, Della Campbell of Midland, Texas, and James Stewart of Enid; one brother, Wilbur Bullis of Dover; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was born Dec. 19, 1918, in Konawa to William T. “Bill” and Mae Spivey Smith and died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at Fairview Hospital after a battle with cancer. She moved with family to Fairview at the age of 8 and attended Union School and Longdale High School. She worked in homes of many people. On March 7, 1939, she married Charley Floyd Pharis in Anthony, Kan. They lived in the Dane community west of Fairview. In 1949, they moved into Fairview. She worked for the old TG&Y on Main Street for more than 20 years. She worked at OTASCO for about 10 years and the Fairview Fellowship Home. She worked at Major County Courthouse as a secretary and receptionist for the Early Settlement, retiring in 1997. She was an active member of First Church of the Nazarene, was a Sunday school teacher on the board and was secretary. Surviving are one daughter, Jean Marlin of Rogers, Ark.; three brothers, Jim Smith and Kenneth Smith, both of Missoula, Mont., and Jack Smith of Amarillo, Texas; two sisters, Willie Pearl Fortune of Delta, Colo., and Jo Goyen of Fairview; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, two brothers and one sister. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma, he completed three years of law school. After recovery from a near fatal car accident, he continued his education at Oklahoma City University and earned his juris doctor degree in 1966. He worked at City Service in Bartlesville and 19 years at Tinker Air Base in Midwest City. He retired to Miami and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He graduated from Enid High School in 1943. then enlisted in the Navy. He received officer training at both Duke and Milligan Universities in the Navy’s V- 12 Program. After serving in the Pacific during World War II, he returned to Enid. He and his two brothers formed H.E. Cummins and Sons Construction Co., in partnership with their father. In 1955, the family formed Cummins Construction Co. He served this entity as president from inception to 1976, then as CEO from 1976 to the present. On April 28, 1951, he married Willa Jane Wells in Enid. Surviving are his wife, Willa Jane; two children, Rob Cummins and Coni Blankenship, both of Enid; one brother, James of Enid; and seven grandchildren. She was a homemaker, an officer in Women’s Circle at United Church of Lahoma and worked with Major County Election Board for many years. Surviving are her husband, Clarence of the home; one daughter, Trena Gay Wheatcraft of Houston; one son, Dean of Meno; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by one son, one sister and four brothers. She was born on August 23, 1960 in Oklahoma City to Charles and Ramona (Barber) Rempe and grew up in Los Angeles, California. She was preceded in death by her parents. Julie was the wife of Rick Hughes for 25 years; loving mother to Shane and Noel Hughes, both of the home; sister to Donnie Rempe, of the home, and Joe Rempe of Enid. She fought a courageous battle and touched all who knew her. Burial will follow in Waukomis Cemetery under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home. Dorothy Mary Thomas Cozart was born on June 8, 1921 in Manchester, Oklahoma, the daughter of DeWitt and Daisy Newcomb Thomas, and died peacefully on Saturday, February 16, 2002 at her residence. Dorothy graduated from Medford High School and continued her lifelong pursuit of learning at Phillips University, where she began teaching, but fate introduced another of Dorothy’s life long loves, Hugh Cozart. Dorothy and Hugh were married on June 3, 1943 in Boise, Idaho where Hugh was posted before he shipped out to serve in World War II. After the war, Dorothy and Hugh settled in the long life of love and work on their farm outside of Waukomis, Oklahoma. Dorothy then returned to education by attending Oklahoma State University where she received her masters in English. Dorothy then began a long teaching career first in Kansas, then at Phillips University. Dorothy invested much of herself in her students, and she has been loved and respected as an educator by all who knew her. Throughout her life, Dorothy researched and lectured on many topics including Oklahoma history. Dorothy was very involved with the Cherokee Strip Museum, and she felt proud of her heritage as an Oklahoman. Even after her retirement from full time teaching, Dorothy continued to learn and teach. Dorothy began teaching English as a second language to several students and continued in this until her death. All her students have become her advisors and more importantly her friends. Dorothy also dedicated her time to her love of quilts. She became a quilt historian and wrote articles, lectured and just enjoyed all the amazing stories and facts she learned about quilts and the women who made them. She was a founding member of the American Quilt Study Group. In addition, Dorothy explored her love of flowers, trees, shrubs, grasses and all growing things through all types of gardening. It was this love that led Dorothy to become a master gardener. In that capacity, she not only continued to learn more about plants and push her gardening skills farther, but she also helped others with any gardening needs through lectures and one on one help. Dorothy was a wonderful person who gave her all to everything she did and everyone she knew. Her family never doubted she loved and respected each one of them. Dorothy was preceded in death by her loving husband, Hugh. Dorothy (“Granny”) is survived by her adoring family, her daughter and son- in- law, Marcia and Hal Greenwood; her son and daughter-in-law, Wayne Cozart and Pat Lampkin. By her grandchildren, Linette, Owen, Aianna and Cade, Dylan, Colleen and Hayes. By her two great-grandchildren, Hugh and Gage. And by Richard Hernendez. All love and miss her dearly. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, three sisters, one step-great grandson and his beloved wife Cora. He married Olga Emelie Helgesen of Max, North Dakota on the 4th of February, 1938. He later married Cora E. Bryant on the 8th of May 1956, in Enid, Oklahoma. He was a retired retail grocer and machinist. Harold is survived by one son James B. Tate of Enid; one daughter, Sharon Ann Dehne of Edmond, Oklahoma; one step-son, Clayton Bryant of Fairview, Oklahoma; and two step-daughters Bobbie R. Needham and Pansy “Pat” Strahan of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; six step grandchildren; eight step great-grandchildren and a host of friends and loved ones. Essie attended the Enid School Systems. She married Mearl F. Mongold on June 3, 1926 in Enid. They were married for 43 years before he preceded her in death on September 25, 1969. She was a homemaker, but also was in charge of babysitting for the United Brethren Church for over 20 years, which is now Willow View United Methodist Church. She became a member of the Church in 1921. Essie is survived by two daughters, Phyllis J. Wilson of Lamont, Betty N. O’Connor of Enid, a son-in-law, Jerry Fenton of Norfolk, VA., ten grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, seven step great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, some of which she helped raise after their mother’s death.
