All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.org/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Lawton Constitution 25 April 2002 Walter Cecil Hulsey - Alabama 21 Jul 1917 - 23 Apr 2002 :Crestwood Cemetery, Gadsden AL MADISON, Ala. — Funeral with military honors for former Lawton resident Walter Cecil Hulsey, 84, Madison, Ala., will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Redstone Arsenal Bicentennial Chapel in Huntsville, Ala. Mr. Hulsey died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, in Madison. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Crestwood Cemetery, Gadsden, Ala., under direction of Laughlin Funeral Home in Huntsville. He was born July 21, 1917, in Gadsden to Almon and Lula Battles Hulsey. A veteran of World War II, he took part in more then 20 missions in Germany, Austria and Italy as a tail-gunner on a B-24 LIBERATOR bomber as part of the 765th Bombardment Squadron, 461st Bomb Group. During his service, he completed tours of duty in Germany, Texas, Oklahoma and Korea. He was the first man assigned to the Pershing missile battalion at Fort Sill, where he retired as the first command sergeant major on Oct. 1, 1968. His decorations and citations include the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Service Medal with three campaign stars, American Defense Ribbon Korean Service Medal, National Defense Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal, two Presidential Unit Citations and numerous Good Conduct Medals. He was a musician, and began playing saxophone in the Glencoe School Band. During World War II, he was selected to provide musical accompaniment to touring USO shows. He was a resident of Lawton until 1997. Survivors include his daughter, LaRue Y. Bloir, Madison; four granddaughters: Michelle Metzcus Reavis, Madison; Cindy O’Grady; Toni McGee and Sherri Purugganan; and 10 great-grandchildren.
