Hicks Davis, born Dec. 22, 1917, died Nov. 5, 2005, in Tulsa. Jaunita was raised in Hulbert, where, after receiving her teacher's certificate from Northeastern Teacher's College, she returned to teach in the public school system. She married James Edward Davis in 1942 and moved to Tahlequah, where she served her community in many civic organizations, including the Cherokee County Election Board and the City Park Board. She was a faithful member of the First Christian Church and former president of the Christian Women's Fellowship. Jaunita was also a member of the Republican Women of Oklahoma, working diligently in many local, state and national campaigns. She was a school volunteer with the Parent Teacher Association, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. She was a charter member of the Tahlequah Garden Clubs and past president of the Chrysanthemum Unit. She belonged to the Tahlequah Flower Arrangers Club and won many awards for her art design in floral arrangements. The Davis family owned Ozark Nurseries and after retirement, they started a small cattle business and began raising Tennessee Walking Horses. They spent their leisure time on trail rides, traveling and square dancing. Jaunita will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, always putting others first and giving herself to a life of service. She is preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Davis; son, James Edward Davis Jr.: brother, James Marvin Hicks; and sisters, Cherrie Helen Parsons and Mary Ann Riel. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Charlene Fabian; son, Benjamin Franklin Davis III and his wife Phyllis; daughter in law, Ann Marie Davis; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Friends wishing to honor her memory may make contributions to the First Christian Church of Tahlequah. Services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005, at First Christian Church of Tahlequah. Burial will follow at Tahlequah City Cemetery.
