Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Durant for Virginia Tyus Fisher, 83, Durant, who died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at Four Seasons Nursing Home. The Rev. Herb Bridgewater will officiate. She was born Saturday, Feb. 14, 1920, in Calera to William F. and Grace (Denton) Tyus. She is a graduate of Calera High School and Southeastern Oklahoma State University, holding a degree in business education. Immediately upon her graduation in 1941, she accepted the position of assistant registrar for the university. She was then named acting registrar in the summer of 1942. In October 1942, then-president T.T. Montgomery convinced her to accept the dual role as administrative secretary and director of career placement for the university. She held these positions under three presidents until her retirement in 1986, giving her 45 years of full-time continuous administrative service to the university. After her full-time retirement in 1986, she continued as director of career and placement in a part-time capacity until 1988. Some of her accomplishments include the placement of countless SOSU graduates with school administrators throughout the area, the state and nation, the institution of Teacher Placement Day and Career Information Day at SOSU. She also served as secretary, vice-president and president of the Oklahoma College and University Placement Association. In addition, she was active in the regional Southwest Placement Association and the National Teacher Placement Association. She was a member of Pi Omega Pi business fraternity, the Oklahoma Education Association, Oklahoma Retired Educators Association, American Association of Retired Persons, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Historical Society of Durant. Her honors include being named to the National Honor Society for Women in Education; In 1978, she was named an honorary member of the Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society; at the 1987 Homecoming, she was honored by the SOSU Alumni Association for 45 years of loyalty, friendship and dedicated service to Southeastern Oklahoma State University Alumni and Former Students, and in 1986, she was recognized by the Southwest Placement Association for 45 years of exemplary service to the Profession of College and University Placement. Outside the university, she was a member of the First Methodist Church of Durant, where she was active in the work of the United Methodist Women and the Alois Sunday School Class. She was also a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA), an educational, philanthropic and social civic sorority, now known as D.E.S.S. On April 2, 1950, she married Theodore E. (Ted) Fisher in Durant. He preceded in her death on April 2, 1988. She was also preceded in death by her parents; sister Georgia Kuykendall; brother Vaughn Tyus, and nephew V. V. 'Bud' Kuykendall. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Calera, with pallbearers Dr. David Norris, Dr. Ernest Sturch, Leroy Watson, David Williams, David Mize and Dr. Leon Hibbs. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Esther Circle of the United Methodist Women and members of the Alois Sunday School Class of the Methodist Church. Family hour will be 5-6:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
