Beckham county marriage license business more than doubled in 1929 over the year of 1928, according to a report on marriages and divorces, compiled by the department of commerce, Washington, D. C. The report shows 750 licenses issued for 1929 and only 350 for 1928. During the same period there was only a gain of three divorces there being 85 granted in 1929 and 82 in 1928. Only one marriage was annuled in the later period while two were annuled in 1928. In spite of the doubled business in issuing marriage license, Beckham county did not by any means lead the field for that period. Oklahoma's 76 counties is lead by Bryan where 1,487 licenses issued in 1929 and only 387 in 1928. Another county to pile up a tremendous gain was Choctaw, with a total of 1,066 licenses in 1929 and only 361 in 1928. The gain in Bryan county is 1,100 for the year and Choctaw county is 705 for the same period. The reason for the tremendous increase in those two counties is due to Texas couples coming to Oklahoma for license in order to avoid the publicity requirement of Texas, the report stated. A number of Oklahoma counties along with the Texas border have enjoyed a big marriage license business since the new marriage law was passed in the Lone Star state about two years ago. Even the three day notice requirement in Texas has had a tendency to swell the total for the entire state in 1929, there having been a gain of 23.7 per cent for the year over 1928. During the first year there were 28,472 licenses issued and in 1929 the total was 35,789 issued. The government records show a 6.3 per cent increase in divorces in Oklahoma for the same period. However, the 1929 figures are said to be preliminary and subject to correction. (The Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, Ok, 14 April 1930) BECKHAM COUNTY HAS HIGH MARRIAGE TOTAL. County Officers Praised For Active Work in Helping National Bureau of Census Compute Statistics. According to information issued from the office of the court clerk late Friday evening, Beckham County has a total of 750 marriage licenses listed with a sum of 95 granted divorces during the year 1929. Similar statistics issued by the department of commerce bureau of the census, Washington, reveal that for the year 1928 only 350 marriage licenses were issued, 82 divorces granted and two marriages were annulled. For the year 1927, 381 marriage licenses were issued, 71 divorces granted and 1 marriage annulled. Beckham county ranks high in marriage licenses issued. A total of 750 for the year 1929 reveals the fact that marriages are on a double increase. County officers are high praised, by the bureau of the census in a recent letter, for their faithful services to the government in assisting them in securing necessary information concerning the issuing of licenses and granting of divorces in the county.
