LATTA (David W. & Bertha (Brown) Latta) (11 Oct 1933, Wednesday, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Latta Celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary Today. Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Latta, pioneer citizens of this section, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary today at their home on West street with a family dinner. Mr. and Mrs. Latta and their seven children came to Oklahoma 30 years ago and homesteaded on a claim 12 miles west of Sayre. In that day, few schools and no Sunday schools were known in the sparsely settled area. The Lattas had been accustomed to regular religious services and one of the first things that Mr. Latta did for the community was to organize a Sunday school. He was made superintendent which office he held for many years. Bringing with them the ideals of the settled and progressive state of Iowa, the family set out trees and shrubs on their prairie home, and the family homestead is now one of the best wooded spots in the western part of the county. Latta circulated the petition which secured the first rural mail route out of Erick. About 15 years ago the family moved to Sayre where they have since made their home. Both have been active workers in the Methodist church to which they have belonged since childhood until the past few years when ill health has made it impossible for them to participate actively in the work. Mrs. Latta has been no less interested in the civic and cultural development of the neighborhood than her husband and at all times has lent her influence for the upbuilding of the community. Their home was one of the community centers in the early day, open alike to friends and strangers within their gates. During the World war, they had two sons in the service and day after day found her knitting sweaters and socks for the Red Cross. Spending the day with them today were their daughters, Mrs. Earl Hix and her family, and Mrs. C. V. Irwin and her family, the other children scattered in far distant states, being unable to come home for the golden occasion. Many old time friends of the early day called during the afternoon to felicitate them upon the event. (12 Oct 1934, Friday, Sayre Headlight Journal, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Pioneer Couple Celebrate Fifty-First Anniversary. In honor of their 51st wedding anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. B (sic) W. Latta were the guests of honor at a dinner given by their daughter Mrs. Earl Hix, Thursday night. Mr. and Mrs. Latta are pioneer county residents coming to the county from Iowa in 1901 and filing 10 miles west of Sayre. They lived on the farm there for 16 years before Mr. Latta retired and moved to Sayre. They have six children, two living in Sayre, Mrs. Claude Irwin and Mrs. Earl Hix, and B. L. Summers of Bakersfield, Cal., Charles Latta of Marshfield, Ore., John Latta of Kerrville, Texas and Russell Latta of Canyon, Tex. They also have 12 grandchildren. Guests at the dinner included Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Latta, Mr. and Mrs. Claud Irwin and son Bobby and Mr. and Mrs. V. C.
