J. Wilson of near Crawford, died at the home of his parents last Saturday morning probably as a result of injuries received in a cutting affray at a ball game at Durham on the 12th day of last June. The news of Wilson's death came as a surprise to the people of the county as news had been (blurred line) the injuries, but those who had a better right to know of his condition were not surprised to learn of his demise. It is said that Claude had been compelled to sleep in a sitting position on account of strangling when he would attempt to recline. Claude was brought to Cheyenne on Friday before his death early Saturday morning, for the purpose of having an examination made as to his physical condition. His condition provoked a great deal of sympathy in Cheyenne. It was indeed pitiful to see a young man with a seemingly strong body with his chin drawn down on his chest, gasping and strangling for breath. Lester Brannon who had been released on bond for his appearance in court to answer to the charge of assault with a deadly weapon, was brought to town Saturday and delivered over to the authorities who placed him in jail without bond. The information has been amended increasing the crime to homicide. The difficulty on June 12 occurred at a ball game at Durham, where Brannon slashed the throat of Claude Wilson with a pocket knife which severed the jugular vein. The body of Wilson was examined by physicians after death but we are not informed as to what their findings were. Brannon will be arraigned in District Court, September 6, on a charge of homicide. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
