Phelps was born in Washington County, Va., January 25, 1865 and died July 23, 1924, at his home eight miles northeast of Elk City, Okla., aged 59 years, 6 months and 28 days. He moved with his parents from Virginia to Johnson County, Kentucky, when a small boy. At the age of 17 he became a pilot on a steam boat on the Big Sandy River. This was one of the greatest epochs of his life. He remained pilot on this river 25 years, after which time he left for Oklahoma. When 29 years of age he married Miss Zora Webb. To this union were born ten children, nine of which are living and one having died in infancy. In 1907 he with his family moved from Kentucky to Oklahoma. Since that time they have lived near Elk City. In 1916 he united with the First Christian Church of which he was a faithful member until the end. He was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge for 35 years. His thoughts for the future for his family and the community in which he lived were of such a nature that will not be forgotten in the many years to come. At his request a Sunday school was organized at Pixlee of which every one express their gratitude. His interest in education when a member of the school board and as a patron, and his willingness to aid in any way possible were a great help to all. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Chas. H. Lemmex of Elk City, at Pixlee school house, Wednesday afternoon. A large number of friends were in attendance at the services showing the great respect held for the deceased and his family. Interment was made in the Thompson Cemetery (Custer County). Many beautiful floral offerings were placed on the grave by the Odd Fellow Lodge, sympathizing friends and members of Pixlee Sunday school. He leaves to mourn his loss, a wife, four daughters, Mrs. Jas. Briscoe, of near Elk City, Mrs. Guy Briscoe of Los Angeles, Cal., Margaret and Willie Mae, and five sons, Edward of Elk City, Frank of Santa Anna, Calif., Otis, Glen and Wade (all of whom were present during his illness except Frank and Mrs. Guy Briscoe), a brother, sister and four grandchildren. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.org/ok/beckham/beckham.html
