Sharkey New York, N.Y. Alice Joan Sharkey Brown, who shared her time between Wurtsboro Hills and New York City, died Friday July 8, 2005 in Brooklyn, N.Y. The daughter of the late Terrence Sharkey and Catherine O'Shea Sharkey, Alice was a homemaker and a retired employee of the JC Penney Company in Manhattan. She was also a member of St. Joseph's Church in Wurtsboro and was the widow of Michael Brown, a World War II Marine Corps veteran, who predeceased her in July, 1982. She is survived by her nephew, Terrence Sharkey of Pittsburgh, Pa., and a niece, Sheila Guszkowski of Colonia, N.J. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 12 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan St. in Wurtsboro, N.Y. Douglas, Louise Louise Douglas, a retired bookkeeper for Highland Ice Cream Company in Newburgh and lifelong area resident, died Thursday, July 7, 2005 at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital, Newburgh Campus. She was 90. The daughter of the Late William and Minnie See Douglas, she was born April 19, 1915 in Newburgh. She was a member of Meadowhill Reformed Church. Survivors include her niece, Diane Martin of Mahopac; great-nephew, Brian Martin; and great-niece, Kimberly Martin. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Sunday, July 10 at White and Venuto Funeral Home, 188 N. Plank Rd., Town of Newburgh. Hunter of Walden, a manager and salesman for Newburgh Park Motors, and a 35-year resident of the area, died July 8, 2005 in Newburgh, N.Y. He was 65. The son of Paul and Daisy Robertson Hunter, he was born October 17, 1939 in Hull, Mass. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. "He was known for his friendly and caring nature and his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren." Survivors include his daughter, Barbara Curiale and husband, Jim, of Wallkill; son, Keith Hunter and his wife, Cynthia, of Walden; three grandchildren: John Hunter, Chelsea and Julia Curiale; three brothers: Theodore Hunter of Texas, Kevin Hunter of Massachusetts and Paul Hunter of Massachusetts; four sisters: Mary Schreckenghost of Pennsylvania, Dianne Boudreau of Massachusetts, Kathleen Harris of Florida, and Barbara Hunter Peasley of Oregon. "Jack" John "Jack" E. Maines, Sr. of New Windsor, a retired foreman for Penney Bag in Newburgh, N.Y. and former employee of Valley Linen in Newburgh, N.Y., died July 8, 2005 in St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital, Cornwall Campus. He was 65. Son of Harold E. Maines and Grace Rose Maines, he was born December 23, 1939 in Newburgh, N.Y. Jack was a recipient of the Community Involvement Award in New Windsor. He is survived by three sons: John E. Maines, Jr. of Newburgh, Keith Maines of the state of Florida, and Allen L. Maines of New Windsor; four sisters: Eleanor Eager and her husband, Milton, of Middlehope, Charlotte Puff of the state of Florida, Edna Redner and her husband, Ralph, of Wallkill, and Marion McGrath and her husband, Thomas, of Newburgh; one brother, Harold Maines of Plattekill; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Joan Paterno of Lakewood, N.J., formerly of Mettacahonts Rd., died Friday July 8, 2005. She was 81. Joan was born in New York City on August 30, 1924, the daughter of Patrick and Margaret (Walsh) Byrnes. Joan had married John J. Paterno on January 26, 1946. Mr. Paterno passed away in 1978. She had been a parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Kerhonkson before moving to New Jersey. Mrs. Paterno is survived by her four children: Peggy Dennin and husband, Matthew, of Accord; Frank Paterno and wife, Choi, of Kerhonkson; Michael Paterno and wife, Laurene of Kerhonkson; and John Paterno of Staten Island, N.Y.; her sister, Mary Britz; ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Joan was predeceased by her sisters, Margaret Mangeri and Catherine Franco; her brother, Neil Byrnes; a grandson and a granddaughter. Shapiro, Arthur Arthur Shapiro of White Sulphur Springs, a retired Superintendent for the Town of Liberty Water and Sewer Department, and a lifelong area resident, died Friday July 8, 2005 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, N.Y. He was 69. The son of the late Morris and Yetta Shapiro, he was born August 23, 1935 in Liberty, N.Y. Arthur had been an employee for the Town of Liberty for thirty-two years; he was a member for over fifty years and a past Chief of the White Sulphur Springs Volunteer Fire Department; he was a former member of the Black Bear Hunting Club. Survivors include his wife, Barbara J. Seeley Shapiro, at home; one son, Scott Shapiro of White Sulphur Springs; his mother-in-law, Mabel Heisler of Liberty; several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services will be held on Tuesday July 12, 2005 at 11:00 AM at the Laurel Hill Cemetery in White Sulphur Springs, N.Y. The Rev. Bridgette LeConey will officiate. Formerly of Ulster County, N.Y. Justin M. Sherin, 77, of Powder Springs, Ga., died June 11, 2005 at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Ga. Son of Paul and Anna Sherin, he was born in Lloyd, N.Y. He graduated from Montgomery High School and had a B.S. and M.A. from N.Y.U. He taught at Monroe-Woodbury and was a basketball, cross-country, and track coach, and a referee for many years before moving to Marathon and then the Hudson, N.Y., where he retired in 1982. He served in the 11th Airborne as a paratrooper. Justin was predeceased by his sisters, Kae Dinunzio and Helen Weltzien. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara; two sons, Justin M. Sherin Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., and Keith S. Sherin of Weston, Conn.; three daughters: Kimberly A. Sherin of Havre De Grace, Md., Kerry Sherin-Wright of Lancaster, Pa., and Kris S. Wooton of Powder Springs, Ga.; two brothers, Paul of Columbus, N.J. and John of Harwich, Mass.; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He will be remembered at a Mass in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Stuyvesant Falls today, July 10, 2005 at 10:00 AM. Bedford Rita R. Bedford Wells of Middletown, a lifelong resident of the area, died Saturday July 9, 2005 at Middletown Park Manor. She was 76. She was born July 1, 1929 in Middletown, N.Y. Survivors include her husband, Clinton Wells, of California; and her children: Michele Day of the state of Florida, George Peter Decker of Warwick, Robert Decker of Massachusetts, Steven Decker of Warwick, Doris Ann Hammond of Massachusetts, and Theresa Decker of Florida, N.Y. She is also survived by her grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Larry Bedford. Winters, a 28-year resident of Monroe and pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Monroe, N.Y., died Friday July 8, 2005 at Orange Regional Medical Center in Goshen, N.Y. He was 84. Son of the late Frank and Mabel Thorpe Winters, he was born December 3, 1920 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was the widower of Pearl LaGrow Winters and Clarissa Cochran Winters. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II. Pastor Winters led Bible studies for the past 14 years at Elant at Goshen in Goshen, N.Y. He is survived by his sons, Thomas Winters and wife, Jan, of Payson, Ariz.; Ronald Winters and wife, Ellen, of Nantucket, Mass.; Richard Winters and wife, Kim, of Monroe; Paul Winters and wife, Elf, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Steven Dorresteyn and wife, Kitty, of Ghent, N.Y.; David Dorresteyn and wife, Sandra, of West Sand Lake, N.Y.; and Timothy Dorresteyn of Shady Shores, Texas; 11 grandchildren: Tracy Winters, Austin Winters, Linsey Winters, Llanya Winters, Kasey Winters, Kalina Winters, Taulrick Winters, Fern Dorresteyn, Ian Dorresteyn, Avery Dorresteyn and Leah Dorresteyn; and one great-grandson, Lorian Ciborski. Mary is survived by her children: Loretta Wood Kelly, Gloria Wood, Irene Wood Gallagher and husband, Daniel, Virginia Wood Zaleski and husband, Phillip, Richard Wood and wife, Adele, Robert Wood and wife, Diana, Roger Wood and wife, Barbara; 26 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren, and 25 great-great-grandchildren.
