George L. Allen, 63, of Smith Road, died Saturday January 15, 2005, at his residence following a long illness. Mr. Allen was born December 11, 1941 in Bridgeport, Conn., the son of the late Orville Allen and Lillian (Linkletter) Allen, who survives him. Mr. Allen served as the Town of Richmondville Highway Superintendent from 1987 until retiring in 1997. Prior to that he worked for the State Department of Transportation. He was a United States Navy veteran, serving from 1960 until receiving an honorable discharge in 1964. Mr. Allen was a member of the Warnerville Veterans of Foreign War. In his spare time George enjoyed woodworking, collecting trains and working on his antique car. He was predeceased by his sister, Linda Longo, in December of 2000. Survivors include his wife, Joan M. Allen, whom he married October 7, 1995 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Richmondville; his mother, Lillian (Linkletter) Allen, of Oneonta; two daughters: Michelle Davenport of Richmondville and Deborah Winnie of Sharon Springs; a step-son, James M. Hotaling, of Richmondville; four grandchildren: Alicia, Amanda and Shelby Davenport of Richmondville, and Dustin Winnie of Sharon Springs; three step-grandchildren: Michael Garcia of Sloansville, and Daniel and Gregory Hotaling of Richmondville; and two nieces: Amy Longo of Winsted, Conn. and Jenn Petersen of Richmondville. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday January 18 at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill, with the Rev. Formerly Monroe, N.Y. John A. Carey, Sr., 81, of St. Petersburg, Fla. and a former lifelong resident of Monroe, N.Y., died peacefully on January 1, 2005 at St. Petersburg General Hospital. John was born in Harriman, N.Y. John was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus in Monroe and Florida and Elk Club. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW Post in Monroe. He was also the former Chief of the Fire Police in Monroe. John was a retired Electrician who served his country in the United States Army during WW II as an engineer on a landing craft. John is survived by his wife of 53 years Doris Reynolds Carey and his three sons John A. Carey, Jr., David G. Carey and James E. Carey, along with his two daughters Edna Fay Carey-Knigge and Joy Meinecke. John is also survived by a sister Margaret Heslin, along with 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and many friends both in Monroe area and the State of Florida. Confield, a retired Adminstrative Assistant for McCall Abstract, New City, N.Y., died Friday January 14, 2005 in Florida Altamont Hospital, Altamont, Fla. She was 83. The daughter of the late Anders Anderson and Anna Runnerstrom, she was born May 20, 1921 in Yunkoping, Sweden. Elsa was the widow of Frank Confield and was a former parishioner of St. Anthony's R.C. Church in Nanuet, N.Y. She is survived by two sons: Mr. Michael P. Confield and his wife, Alice, of Highland Mills, and Mr. Steven M. "Red" Dominick, of Newburgh, a former City of Newburgh Police Officer and Building and Grounds Supervisor with the Newburgh City School District, entered into rest Thursday, January 13, 2005 at home. He was 74. Son of the late Robert and Annabel Rau Dominick, he was born August 3, 1930 in Newburgh. Red was a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy, Class of '48, where he had an outstanding catching career. He proudly served his country in the US Navy, where he earned the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Medal. Red played semi-pro baseball with the Newburgh Nuclears. He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church, Newburgh, a member of CSEA and several snowmobile clubs. He will be remembered also for his love of fishing and boating. He will be dearly missed. Survivors include his sons, Robert and his wife Patricia of Wallkill, Glenn of Walden, Scott of Seattle, WA; his daughter, Debra Sherwood of Newburgh; his brother Edward Conroy of Pine Bush; grandchildren, Robert M. (Hyde) Florence M. (Hyde) House, 93, of Hartford, Conn, passed away Friday January 14, 2005 at Avery Heights, in Hartford. She was born July 30, 1911 in Otisville, N.Y., beloved daughter of the late Claude C. & Anna (Hampe) Hyde and lived most of her life in upstate New York and Florida. She was 96. Sadie, the widow of Glen Wild poultry farmer Abe Jaffe, was born in Glens Falls, N.Y. on May 13, 1908, the daughter of Jacob and Yetta Bakst. She has lived in Glen Wild since 1942. She taught third and fifth grades at the Cook School until her retirement in 1973. She was a volunteer for many years at Community General Hospital, and was a founding member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Glen Wild Synagogue and the Glen Wild Women's Club. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Naomi Jaffe and Clint Anglin, of Troy, N.Y.; her daughter-in-law, Faun Bank, of Tamworth, Ontario; four grandchildren, Avalon Anglin-Jaffe of Troy and Lucas, Leigh, and Max Bank-Jaffe of Tamworth; her sister, Esther Cutler of Naples, Florida; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Abe Jaffe, her son, Bernard Jaffe, and three sisters, Reva Cohen, Ida Levine, and Gertrude Feintuch. Mitchell, a homemaker and longtime resident of the area, died January 14, 2005 at Wingate at St. Francis Hospital in Beacon, N.Y. She was 90. The daughter of the late Angelo and Angelina DiBaggio Altopiedi, she was born May 4, 1914 in Malden On Hudson, N.Y. Viola was the widow of Michael Arthur Mitchell. She is survived by one daughter, Anna Marie Mitchell, of Norfolk, Va.; one brother, Philip Altopiedi, of Newburgh; two sisters: Anna Crudele of New Windsor and Margaret Roe of Town of Newburgh; three grandchildren: Michael Vieiro and his wife, Mary Jo, of Newburgh, Gina Hillman and her husband, Tim, of Montgomery, and Anna Hillman of Connecticut; four great-grandchildren: Leigh Anna Vieiro, Joseph Vieiro, Brittney Hillman and Jake Hillman; and many nieces and nephews. The daughter of the late Joseph and Helen Nagecka Golebieski, she was born in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, N.Y. on December 24, 1944. Teresa was a banker at Morgan Guarantee Trust in New York City, the owner of Marlboro Realty in Marlboro, N.Y., and most recently a classroom coordinator at A.C. Moore in Wappingers Falls, N.Y. She was active with the Town of Marlboro Volunteer Ambulance Corps., a parish council member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Greenpoint, Brooklyn, N.Y., and den leader for Cub Scout Pack #72 in Marlboro. She was the widow of Henry A. Neuman who predeceased her on July 11, 2000. Surviving her are one daughter, Aleksandra Werba and her husband, Michael, of Marlboro, N.Y.; one son, Andrew Neuman of the Town of Newburgh; one sister, Dorothy Gaffney of Akron, Ohio; one cousin, Joseph Lach, at home in Marlboro, N.Y.; three nieces and one nephew. "The Banana Man" Oelkers of Barryville, NY, a retired owner of Oelkers General Store and 34 year resident of Barryville, died Friday, January 14, 2005 at Bon Secours Community Hospital. He was 89. He was born February 13, 1915 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Gustav and the late Bernadine Steinbrink Oelkers. He was the widower of Ruth Emily Olsen Oelkers; she died August 3, 2002. Scott OP, Sister Margaret Sister Margaret Scott, OP (Sister Ann Arthur Scott, OP) of Newburgh, N.Y., died Thursday, January 13, 2005 in Saint Luke Cornwall Hospital, Newburgh Campus. She was 80. The daughter of Arthur and Ann Mannion Scott, she was born May 2, 1924 in Jersey City, N.J. She entered the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh on September 8, 1945 and made Final Profession August 26, 1950. Sister received a BS in Education and Science from Fordham University, N.Y. and an MA in Educational Administration and Secondary School Science from Villanova University, Pa. She also received Certification from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati providing updates in Ecclesial and Christological Theology and in Mexican Cultural Orientation in San Antonio, Texas. Her ministries included elementary school teaching in Yonkers, N.Y. and secondary school science in Gloucester Catholic High School, N.J. Sister also served as principal in the elementary schools of Paterson, Gloucester, and Deal, N.J., St. Mary in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and as associate principal at Mt. St. Mary High School in Newburgh, N.Y. She was food service manager and maintenance supervisor at the Mt. St. Mary Convent, Newburgh. Sister was elected to the Executive Council of the Newburgh Congregation from 1971 to 1979 and was also Administrative Assistant for Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Camden, N.J. from 1969 to 1973. Sister was the recipient of the Jubilee Medal, Pro Meritis for distinguished service in the Archdiocese of Newark, N.J. Following her years in School Education, she served as Pastoral Assistant in Sacred Heart Parish, Newburgh and as Pastoral Associate in Ascension Parish in New Milford, N.J. In recent years, she retired to Mount Saint Mary, Newburgh, N.Y. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Four brothers, John, Arthur, Oilver and Albert and one sister, Ann Melecki predeceased her. Visitation will be held Monday, January 17 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Dominican Sisters of Hope Convent Chapel, 320 Powell Ave., Newburgh. Slater, Robert Anton "Bob" Mr. Robert Anton "Bob" Slater, of Middletown, N.Y., passed away Friday, January 14, 2005 at Vassar Brother Hospital, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He was 71. Born in Kingston, N.Y. on December 26, 1933, he was the son of John W. and Jennie McHugh Slater. He served during the Korean War in the Air Force. He was past Commander, Vice Commander and Adjutant of American Legion Post 151, a member of Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post 692, was head of security at Orange County Fairgrounds, member of Local Union IBEW 503, Orange and Rockland 25-Year Club, member and past Captain of Ontario Hose Company, #5, Middletown Fire Department, was a past Republican Committeeman for Middletown, served as a dog catcher for the city of Middletown, loved bowling, was a member of Middletown Bowling Association and was instrumental in forming Middletown Senior Fun League. He joined Orange and Rockland Utilities in 1960 as a Service Operator, spent 15 years as an Electric Meter Tester and retired in 1998 as Security Coordinator. He was a loving Husband, Father, Stepfather, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He fought for a long time and God saw he was getting tired and called him home to rest. He will be loved and sadly missed. He is survived by his wife Maryann Pierce Slater at home; 4 daughters Toni Davis and her husband Richard of Middletown, Rosalie Antoni of Montgomery, Shelia Gatley and her husband Edward of Morehead City, N.C., Maria Burkhead and her husband Jim of Wallkill; his stepdaughter Sharon Palazzo and stepson Joseph Palazzo Jr. of Middletown; 2 sisters Janet Hughes of Mount Hope and Jean Leicht of Spring Hill, Fla.; 7 grandchildren Bryan, David, Nicole, Maria, Eric, Stevielyn, Marissa; 2 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Taylor, president and founder of Corvette Specialty Center in Walden, N.Y., and longtime resident of the area, died January 13, 2005 in Manhattan, N.Y. He was 60. The son of the late Herbert and Dorothy Nolan Taylor, he was born March 2, 1944 in Cambridge, Mass. Surviving him are his wife, Diane McElroy Taylor, at home; two daughters: Annabel Champlin and Emily Taylor, both of Boston, Mass.; three brothers: Richard Taylor of Newburgh, William Taylor of Milton, Mass., and Robert Taylor of Quincy, Mass.; one grandson, Ethan Champlin; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, James Taylor. A family statement reads: "Tom was a kind, generous, devoted husband and loving father and grandfather. He was a hard working entrepreneur who enjoyed gardening, traveling to tropical islands and spending time with his family and friends. As the president and founder of Corvette Specialty Center in Walden, N.Y., he fulfilled his lifelong passion for Corvettes and enjoyed the success of his business for over 30 years. Each year he took pride in his large garden and looked forward to sharing his harvests with friends. An avid traveler, he looked forward to weekends in Orleans, Cape Cod, Massachussetts, where he also spent his youthful summers as well as traveling to Hawaii, which he considered paradise. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family at their residence in St. Thomas U.S.V.I. Tom will be deeply missed and the permanent smile on his face will never be forgotten." A gathering to celebrate the life of Thomas will be Saturday February 5, 2005 from 2-7 PM at the Taylor Home. Cremation will be in Cedar Hill Crematory.
