Several days prior to his death he had been bitten by a rattlesnake, and drank quantities of whiskey to counteract the effects of the poison. Three or four days before death his appetite failed him, and he offered his horses and buckboard to any one who would give him a pistol to kill himself with, as he was suffering horribly. Joe McClane was man of many good parts, and had as many experiences on the Pacific Coast as usually falls to the lot of a pioneer. He leaves a son and daughter to mourn him, the former living at Reno and the latter in San Francisco.
