Wayne County, NC - Everettsville Female Academy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Glimpses of Wayne County, NC - An Architectural History Everettsville-Woodland Friends Academy Heather Ann Lane (off SR 1130) Dudley vicinity Ca. 1840 Joseph Everett is said to have designed the two-story weatherboarded Federal/ Greek Revival-style Everettsville Academy. According to historian John B. Flowers III, the academy was actually Joseph Everett's house, but this has not been definitely established. David B. Everett, one of Joseph Everett's heirs, was a part owner of the building and property after Everett's death sometime in the 1840s. In July 1847, John West and David B. Everett deeded a four-acre parcel of land in Everettsville known as the Academy Square to the trustees of the Everettsville Academy. The land was given with the understanding that "the trustees and their successors shall not build or cause to be built on the [Academy Square], that this deed is intended to convey any house or houses besides the one now used as an Academy except that the interest of the school may require an enlargement of the present building." The deed also prohibited the Everettsville Female Academy's conversion to a residence. Finally, there was a priviso that should the Academy discontiue and not be revived within ten years, the property would then revert to Messrs. Everett and West or their heirs. The Academy was bought by the Woodland Friends Meeting by the 1880s, moved to their nearby property in what is now known as the Mar Mac area south of Goldsboro, and used as a Quaker school until the 1920s. The Academy is presently located at the edge of a small trailer park behind the former Woodland Friends Meeting House, which was dissolved in 1991. [Legend has it that it was dis-assembled board by board, moved and re-assembled at its present site] [Location, approximately one mile south on the left off Woodland Church Road from its intersection to Hwy 13 west as it leaves the Five Points area] [On a recent visit in early July, 2006 to the site, the building is no longer there] ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
