He was 91. Kenan Professor Emeritus of Zoology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Pioneer in development of fisheries research. Former president of American Society of Zoologists. Former president of the Ecological Society of American and Limnological Society of America. In 1947, he won the Mayflower Cup for his book "This Great and Wide Sea". In 1950, he was presented the O. Max Gardner Award. The award goes to the member of the faculty making the "greatest contribution to the welfare of the human race." He was a member of the distinguished Coker family of South Carolina. He was born in 1876. He graduated from the University of North Carolina, received the Ph.D. at John Hopkins and received the honorary LL.D. also at Chapel Hill. He was a developer of the North Carolina seafood industry. His research in the coastal waters of North Carolina led to greatly increase commercial value and importance of shrimp, oyster and other fisheries. Named in his honor, is the new Robert E. Coker building (nearing completion) at the UNC Marine Research Laboratories in Morehead City.
