Jan. 13, 1806, Raleigh Minerva Written: December 28, 1805 Recorded: January 13, 1806 NOTICE OF SEPARATION Notice is hereby given that SARAH, my wife, hath made her elopement from my bed and board without any cause by me given, but on the contrary, ever since my marriage with her I have manifested to her that affectionate tenderness and delicacy due from a husband to a wife, and have in every instance on my part, as far as her presence gave me the opportunity, endeavored to perform those duties which ought to be reciprocal. But had the repeated mortification to experience delinquency on her part. – Therefore, all persons are hereby forewarned from trading with or giving her credit on my account, as I am determined to pay no debt that she may hereafter contract: Also, all persons are hereby forewarned at their peril, from harboring, concealing or abetting her, as I am determined to pursue legal measures for redress against each and every one so offending. Nevertheless, I conceive it a duty that I owe to her character to declare, that I do not accuse her with infidelity to my bed, otherwise than deferring it; nor do I believe that she is, or has been, in a higher degree, guilty.
