Hertford County, NC - Solon Borland's Children ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Solon Borland & FAMILY Chapter 3: "Solon's Children" George Godwin BORLAND (10/29/08) Solon BORLAND (1811VA-1864TX) reportedly had seven children. Thomas & Harold ("Little Solon") with first wife Huldah, possibly one with second wife Elizabeth, rumored to have had one by creole lady friend, George Godwin, Fanny Green & Mary Melbourne with third and last wife Mary. We found documentation that the five known children, Thomas, Harold ("Little Solon"), George Godwin, Fanny Green, Mary Melbourne plus Solon's two granddaughters Grace Melbourne and Mary Borland BEATTIE, lived lives any parent should be most proud about. We were unable to trace his son Thomas for three years until 2006 with letters from The College of William & Mary archives. Nothing found on Solon's four grandsons, Russell & Charles BORLAND, Godwin Borland MOORES, or George Melbourne BEATTIE (noted in letter of step-father, Colonel O C GRAY, in New York working for Oliver typewriter company), --- hopefully they too lead good lives. 3C. GEORGE GODWIN BORLAND (1846AR-1862TX): ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GEORGE GODWIN BORLAND was born in Little Rock Wednesday, 11 March 1846, prior to the Mexican-American War, while his father was Adjutant General of Arkansas. He was first known child of Solon's third marriage with Mary Isabel MELBOURNE (1824LA-1862AR), named for Solon's uncle, George GODWIN (1787VA-1866VA), of Nansemond county, Virginia who with wife Fanny GREEN, born 1785, raised and educated Solon for a period of time around 1820 (see 1820 census & 1821 school receipt) and George's half-brother Thomas (1833NC-1859AR) from 1837 to 1845. George, single, died 24 June 1862 in Clarksville, Red River county, Texas.
