I, Mary Clayton of the state of North Carolina, and county of Craven, being of perfect mind and memory, therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body, and knowing that it is appointed for all people once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say: First of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it, and through the mercy of Christ, my Redeemer, I trust and hope assuredly to be saved; and for my body, I recommend to the earth, to be decently buried in a Christian like manner at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named; and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give and dispose of the same in the following manner. Imprimis, it is my will and I do order that in the first place, all my just debts be paid. Item, I give to my daughter Mime Clayton, a negro woman named Doll, her lifetime and at her death to the children of Jesse Leston, begotten of the body of his first wife. I also give to Mime Clayton, my horse and bridle and saddle, one feather bed and furniture, and two bedsteads, three cows and one yearling, and one steer. Item, I give to my grandson Henry Carraway, one heifer. Item, I give to my granddaughter Mary Leston, one heifer of Leston’s. Item, I give to my grandson Gideon Carraway, one heifer yearling. Item, I give to my grandson Stephen Delamar, one heifer yearling. Item, I give to William Clayton, Sr. one cow in his own mark. Item, I give to my grandson Henry Carraway, one cow and bull. Item, I give to Mary Carraway, one chest. Item, I give all the rest of my property to my daughter Mime Clayton. I do constitute, make and ordain my friend Jesse Leston, my only and sole Executor of this my last will and testament, and I do hereby utterly disannul, revoke and disallow all and every other former testaments, wills, legacies, and executors by me in any wise before named, willed, bequeathed, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and fixed my seal the day and year above written.
