The Edenton Gazette   June 2, 1829
   It is with  sincere and sympathetic regret that we record the death of 
ARMISTEAD THORP, eldest son of MRS. PRISCILLA THORP of Edenton. He was drowned 
at sea on the 4th of May, as the vessel in which he was sailing was 
approaching the coast of the United States. Thus, in an unexpected moment, and 
in anticipation of a speedy and happy return to his native land, was separated 
from the arms of his affectionate relatives and the wishes of his friends, a 
youth in the dawn of manhood and in the promise of his youthfulness, who 
seemed destined to be the joy and pride of his family; the stay and solace of 
an amiable mother, and the father and protector of her orphan children.
